I agree with Jcm, 8 string guitars sound like shit. Most 7 string guitars do as well, since the scale length is extremely short for how low its tuned. A cello has a scale length of over 27 inches and its still only tuned to low C. If you want to go that low you really need a baritone guitar, which then you have the problem of your high string needing to be too thin if you want a high E. Compromising doesn't work, it's much better to have multiple guitars. If you want a low F# then play bass.

The solution is a 25.5" scale, 21 fret, 6 string guitar in standard tuning with 3 single coil pickups.

That works for 7 string guitars but not so much for 8 string. On Strandberg's website they talk about this. They set the low F# to 28" and the high E to 26.5", which is quite a bit longer than a normal scale length for the normal strings (EADGBE), long enough for the B string, but still short for the low F#. Compared to a normal bass (34") it's short by 6" still.
