I'm a mechanical engineer. The few woman I studied with got better grades and graduated earlier than their male counterparts because they studied and worked harder. It's a shame there are so few women in engineering.

It actually tends to be the reverse. Historically if a career has a large number of women that career tends to become devalued. No one in america would argue that a doctor shouldn't be a high paying position, and yet in Russia it's seen as woman's work and pays worse than teaching, a man's profession.

Anyway, since there's people talking about engineering jobs, my partner graduated with a degree in biomechanical engineering around 8 months ago and wasn't able to find a job in the field despite applying constantly. They're now working as a manager at a pharmacy and have kind of given up, and don't have the energy to apply for more stuff or tell me what I need to do to fill out applications for them. Any suggestions on how I can help them?

On the bullshit side of things it's not about academic qualifications or years of experience, it's corporate title. If you were "head of quality assurance" but all you did was watch a dashboard, you can get high pay in a similarly useless position. Call yourself a PR consultant and companies will publish things you write even if you make spelling mistakes.

The only way out is to specialise in a niche that stupid people wont even try to fake their way into.

Civil Engineer graduate and I saw very similiar stuff. Not many women, but the ones that are there WANT it. Definitely worked harder than a majority of the guys who were just there cause 'eh it pays well'
