Underappreciated masterpieces?
literally every Nico album
Fuck you're right
Been reading P4k lately, eh
nico hated this album and from interviews it seems like they forced her to release something she was completely unhappy with
it does have some nice moments but i'd rather listen to her actual music
>highly acclaimed, influential album
>underappreciated
This board sometimes. Geez. Pic related
I recently bought Desertshore on vinyl for a very modest price and being all excited what a classic I'd scored I put it spinning only to realize that it's basically almost Janitor of Lunacy (which is an absolutely stunning track!) and filler
OK, I like Mutterlein and All The is My Own, but holy shit was that album less good than I remembered because I regularly only listen to the best track.
Chelsea Girl is a great fucking album though.
>racist woman who believed whites were creatively superior to other races
I'm glad she died in that cycling accident.
Source? Sorry I'm pretty new to nico and I've heard stuff but don't really know what the deal was
From Wikipedia (not the most reliable in general, but check the citations):
"Nico was described by some friends and colleagues as racist. Her friend Danny Fields, the American journalist who helped her sign to Elektra Records, described her as "Nazi-esque", saying: "Every once in a while there'd be something about Jews and I'd be, 'But Nico, I'm Jewish,' and she was like 'Yes, yes, I don't mean you.' She had a definite Nordic Aryan streak, [the belief] that she was physically, spiritually and creatively superior", a view she appears to have continued to maintain throughout her later years. According to Fields, Nico once attacked a mixed-race woman in a restaurant with a smashed wineglass, saying "I hate black people". During a performance in Berlin, the audience rioted after Nico performed the German national anthem "Deutschlandlied", including a verse omitted since 1945 for its nationalist associations.[23] However, Nico dedicated this performance to militant Andreas Baader, leader of the anti-fascist Red Army Faction.[24]"
...
holy shit.. For some reason nico shouting "I hate black people" holding a smashed wine glass is a hilarious but disturbing image to me
teenage snuff film is better. still a really solid 8/10 though.
Dude wtf, Teenage Snuff Film is a top pleb choice. Pop Crimes is the shit. Tho TSF is pretty good too but Pop Crimes is just a stop on
*spot on
this is hardly unappreciated lol
she was born just before the war so some fucked-upness is expected, that generation of Germans was just basically fucked up from the start - that said, I enjoy a lot of her music but have no need to delve into what "she really thought of things"
when she was stirring shit up with the "Deutschland, Deutschland, Über Alles" -song, that was still dedicated to Andreas Baader of the Baader-Meinhof Group, so she was far left rather than far right - any racism aside
Teen Age Snuff Film, Popcrimes or Haus Der Lüge?
haus
no one cares, oh my fucking god.
we literally never have nico threads and when we do it's always some fucking faggot on a pedestal trying to shed a light on us on how she was a racist.
it was the fucking 60's retard, everyone was prejudiced in some way, especially growing up the way she did.
how does this affect her music in any way?
or are you really saying that this somehow negates how great of an artist she was?
everybody who knows tsf knows pop crimes. The first is appreciated more because it's better.
That neubauten album isn't unappreciated, though I guess it is compared to Nico(!)
It might be essential album of the genre, but overall underappreciated IMHO
fuck off r*ddit, you really dont need to use a tripcode here you attention seeking poser
>That neubauten album isn't unappreciated
I guess so then
But I want to, problem, le trolelel faec? xD ebin r*ddit burn!!!!!!!1
Lets forget that and focus on what really made Nico unique "We'd be walking in New York at night and she'd have to pee, so she'd squat down between two parked cars." -Fields
>go to P4k
>literally the last reviewed album is Chelsea Girl
>OP has never heard of it until today and thinks it's some obscure hidden gem
I dont even know what P4k is lmao I've been listening to Nico albums all week
>Nico
>good
thank god she's dead and thank god she died the way she did
Music as an art form is supposed to represent the creativity and eclecticism we have as humans, and the beauty that blooms inside from that individuality. Racism aims to annihilate all forms of individuality, and in turn, keep us in a tepid state of meaninglessness, where the prison of solitude kills us all. How dare you try to eschew the most obvious truth of music?
And by the way, if she had any form of artistic integrity, she would not delude herself into such a commonplace, naive ideology. Artists do not match the surroundings of society; they create a new realm where fantasy intertwines with the meaning of life. Nico is a terrible musician, artist and person, and deserves no recognition whatsoever. She is meaningless.
People, don't let reality keep you from living inside your forest. Your trees are all that matters, not anyone else's. Believe in yourself, and let your imagination guide you to the hearts of flowers.
>edgy phoneposter is a brainlet
who would have thought
if i looked like aryan godess as she did, well id feel superior too
Holy shit dude I just like the sound of her voice
Honestly, I wouldn't trust Nico's opinions on her own albums even, she needed other people to help her make music because she wasn't a very talented songwriter on her own. Even her albums where she wrote her own music were only good because Cale was helping her with them.
BUT YOU- never mind, I like her voice too LMAO.
BUT MY POINT STILL STANDS!
That's really embarrassing if you haven't ever heard of p4k. Holy shit
What do you want from me
Correct but only relevant if you decide to include discussion of the artist as a metric for your own subjective enjoyment of art, which is possible yet not a requirement.
FUCKING KEK, LMAO
Your boi pussy
Fair
certainly as an artist, I respect John Cale much more than Nico and certainly Nico doesn't seem like a complete auteur type artist, but on the other hand, the albums where Cale worked together with Nico are on average better than Cale's solo albums, so there's that
As much of an asshole Nico is, Danny Fields is 10x more of an asshole. Him calling Nico racist is like Warhol calling Lou a faggot.
I get your point but I don’t think an artists personal beliefs should come between the listener and good music. It’s a shame that she was a racist, but that fact doesn’t stop me from enjoying her music, just as I will keep enjoying Phil Spector and Ducktails, even if they are individuals with a very questionable morality.
Also Chelsea Girls doesn't have any of her writing on it and she doesn't like it so her views probably aren't reflected.
>Concert footage of a middle-age Nico in the early ’80s portray her as a skeletal figure with gaunt cheeks, rotten teeth, and sunken eyes from a disturbing heroin addiction. It’s as if Nico found power in destroying her image.
No, it's almost as if she was a heroin addict like any other and not some romantic tragic hero battling the exact battle you want her to for the reasons you want her to because you like her music. Christ I fucking hate Pitchfork.
Yeah if you hate Nico then you should love this album. She threw a fit because said she literally cried because they added strings and flute arraignments to the album.
>Nico said in 1981: "I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! ... They added strings, and— I didn't like them, but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute."
t. brainlet
your prose is pretentiously overwrought and betrays your pseud aspirations
the Flute is Nico's Kyrptonite
she seems sweet.
I feel like you're a big pleb for thinking that
Everytime someone talks about this album it's about how good it is though
y-you too
Its not underappreciated
She hated being pretty and she hated being a 1950s supermodel so its not like they pulled that out of their ass
she was right though
>lack of individuality creates a prison of solitude
Pretty sure it's the opposite. Excess individuality is what creates solitude. I don't think you even understand what you're arguing though. You're just horrified that a racist can not only be human but also make amazing art. don't worry though you'll always be better than her because you aren't le evil racist nazi
>implying that racism is morally on par with being a murderer
peak moral panic
>Pretty sure it's the opposite. Excess individuality is what creates solitude.
Individuality fails only when society rejects such ambition. Otherwise, without diversity spreading in society, life would remain monotonous in its simplicity. Racism fails to address the distinctive quirks in people of different ethnicities, and as such places a limit on individuality, a fundamental principle of art.
year's go by, Church of Anthrax and Paris 1919 get more attractive
who knows, at what age are you even allowed to judge anything
funny thing
If racism negates art, then how did the classical composers and great writers from before the second half of the 20th century manage to make such amazing works at a time when the vast majority of people had views that would be considered unacceptably racist today?
Not that guy but I just happened to hear Chelsea Girl for the first time yesterday while looking for stuff that Lou Reed had worked on. I like it, it's cool to see all this buzz about it
>hates blacks
>dated a man who wrote a song called "I want to be black"
Well the lyrics to that song are...
>I want to be black
>Have natural rhythm
>Shoot twenty feet of jism, too
>And fuck up Jews
>I want to be black
>I want to be a Panther
Seems like they were perfect for each other.
I don't entirely understand your rhetoric. Are you insinuating that early 20th century artists adhered to a racist ideology, or at least employed prejudiced values in their artwork? Or that their art reflected the flawed dogma of society during that period? If you're implying the latter, you couldn't be further from the truth. Surrealism dominated the art culture of the early part of the decade, in which highly idiosyncratic dreams inspired by Freudian psychology contrasted with the utterly limited ideas of racism. If you argue the former, then I implore you to name me 5 exalted artists/musicians from the 20th century (besides Nico) that have openly expressed racist narratives, either in their artwork, writing or music. And keep in mind this:
"Artists do not match the surroundings of society; they create a new realm where fantasy intertwines with the meaning of life."
If you can provide a counter-argument to my original statement, then I'll stand corrected.
