This sounds exactly like the situation of one of the managers at my store. We had our 2nd key person quit recently, so the old 3rd and 4th got bumped up, and then the front end manager transferred. The new 4th doesn't really want to do it, and the store director keeps hiring her friends children and puts them in positions they are completely unqualified for. She's trying to put this 19 year old bitch in charge of the front end. The whole place is in absolute chaos. The favoritism is so bad that a large number of employees are calling corporate to complain. Hopefully we get her fired.

The thing is that I've been ridiculed for leaving the job early even though I take make paid breaks at the end of the shift while everyone goes out with thier friends at the middle of the shift. Or being called a racist because of one of the blacks didn't want to work. Fight it by sending one of the lazy people home early. If they aren't doing anything to actively contribute, and you are the one in charge at the time, I assume this is within your power. Make an example out of someone. The other ones should fall in line. If they don't, do it again. Don't stop trying to be friendly with them though, and help them out if they really need it. Do your own job to the best of your ability. Show them that you're better than they are without saying it. You need them to like you, but to also respect you. And if you're afraid of some kind of sexual harassment claims, don't forget to document any conversation that could possibly be taken the wrong way.
