There's a meteor inside it, that in Arabia's polytheistic past was worshiped as a god.
When Muhammad rose to power he said it was the stone was sent from heaven to show Adam and Eve where to built a temple (even though the site never had any relation to Judaism). This was basically done to placate the local leaders of Mecca, since before Islam Semitic polytheists traveled to Mecca to see the stone and they feared this new religion would remove that source of income from the pilgrimages.
So basically now the pilgrims still come to the same spot, but only the religion has changed.
