I've seen and love Blue Velvet, but it doesn't quite fit the theme. The investigations are pretty secondary and the whole film feels like something else.

A man after my own heart. That is an amazing list of most of my favorite films. I'll add: >Prisoners >Manhunter
Usually my go to recommendation is High and Low to people looking for more in this genre. Props for having seen that one already.

I suppose Inherent Vice may be a worthwhile addition as well.

High and Low was fantastic
Wasn't huge on Prisoners though, plus its more of an emotional journey than a investigative one anyway.

Harper (1966) with Paul Newman. A really good meat-and-potatoes detective story with a great cast. The setting is wonderful, showing both the glitzy and the seamy side of 1960's California, and nobody is who they seem to be. If you like intrigue, you need to see this movie.

Where is the investigation in that? Everyone knows where they stand and they are just trying to resolve things. It's a great movie no doubt, but not an investigation one.
Usual Suspects isn't really either, it's just a retelling of a story during an interview for the most part.
Cameron Mitchell
>Where is the investigation in that? Once arthur died Micheal does plenty of investigating.

Seven Days in May is along this vein and features Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster as military men who, well, I won't spoil it
