So we use data to make inferences about things right? More precisely, we take a handful of randomly chosen representatives (called the sample) from the set of all possible things (the population). For quantitative data, we can describe a population's central tendency with several measures, the most popular and useful being the mean (the others are median, and mode, but since you didn't mention those we will ignore them). The mean is calculated by first adding up all of the measurements in your data set, then dividing by the total number of measurements of that set. So if your set was {8, 12, 13}, the mean would be (8+12+13)/3 = 11. Now, knowing the meaning is great and all but it doesn't tell you everything you might want to know about a data set. For instance consider the set {11, 11, 11}. If you do the math you will see it also has a mean of 11, but it us quite different from our other set; the mean is 11 because literally every value in it is 11.There is no variation. This leads us to our second important measure of a dataset:it's variance. I'll continue in another post so you can get this far...

Now as you may have guessed, variance is a measure of the "spread" of a dataset. It is used quite a bit in theoretical mathematical statistics, but in practice we typically use its square root: the standard deviation. The standard deviation of a data set is the average amount that each measurement differs from the mean. Reread that last sentence to make sure it makes sense. With our second data set from above, the standard deviation is 0; literally no value deviates from the mean since if course each value is equal to the mean. The formula for it looks a little complicated but if you look closely you will see it is very similar to the formula for the mean (and that's because in a way it IS a mean; it is the mean, or average, amount that each measurement differs from the dataset's mean).
