Have you listened their earlier records? They were quite literally a post-punk band whose guitarist would record solo stuff with Jah Wobble and the drummer from Can, and then linked up with Brian Eno, became stratospheric popular, but spend the next decade being one of the most consistently solid stadium-level rock acts and even set the stage for bands like Radiohead to experiment with electronic music as a necessary radical change in direction to avoid stagnation.
The problem is that they slipped up in the late 90s and have spent the most recent 20 years playing it safe and covering their tracks with mediocre shit.
