i worked for a housing association in the north, the standard waiting time was 7 years. the only way to get bumped to the top of the list was if you were suffering domestic abuse or lived in a severely overcrowded house. the vast majority of our residents were white brits. lots of them fell behind on rent despite being on housing benefit, and we had to take a dozen residents to court every week for rent arrears. most of them would not even turn up at court and the judges would rule against them in their absence.

if you're a family waiting for a 6 bed house you're in cloud cuckoo land. though a single male could quite easily get a flat in a tower block that doesn't allow children or pets.

we had the police in the office at least once a week sorting out some domestic violence or anti social behaviour. occasionally residents would commit suicide at home and our staff would find the body. one slit his wrists using a butter knife and died. once, a nonce was jailed and we had to make sure nobody vandalised his house while we cleared it and reallocated it.

it was common to find a dingy, smelly, disgusting flat with a massive widescreen TV with sky sports and a resident who hadn't worked in 20 years.

we got frequent reports of drunken fighting, from the OAP housing. some of them had dementia and yet would be trusted to cook their own meals, one man was found calmly sitting at his dinner table while his whole oven was on fire and he was oblivious.

i met an old man who had reported his neighbour for excessive noise, the man told me he threatened the neighbour with a knife. the neighbour said the old man kept bringing prostitutes into the flats, the old man admitted he had women round but said they were helping him write his life story. he told me he wanted to return to his hometown of Leicester "and die there"

tower block janitors would get threatened with machetes. oh yeah and i'm pretty sure they renovated 3 tower blocks using flammable cladding.
