If: 1. roughly half of illegal immigrants are here on overstayed visas 2. most of the remaining are smuggled through ports of entry by coyotajes 3. easy areas of entry and populated areas are already fenced off 4. the remaining remote areas that are open are made up of natural barriers more difficult to cross than a wall while also being heavily watched by Border Patrol
then what logical reason is there for building a wall? Is it a symbolic thing? Does he campaign on it just because it gets the people riled up? I mean, no matter what your stance is on immigration, just looking at the situation it seems pretty obvious that a wall isn't going to have much of an effect on anything.
Ther s no logical reason for it. President Trump will claim he was speaking metaphorically and what he actually meant was increasing the border security budget, increasing Visa controls and making it harder to wire money to Mexico.

Militarizing the border has made the problem worse: Crossing into the US has increased, while militarizing the border has increased the cost of that crossing, so the 85% that used to cross back now bring their families with them and to avoid ICE move all over the country instead of just staying in CA like they used to, and have anchor babies.
