The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
New Neil Young is a bit too political but what isn't these days?
Hunter King
alright, it's december 1st, time to rep the name change once again
Elysia Crampton - American Drift (2015) >latin electronic
Crampton's ideas are always enthralling to listen to, this album running through styles as varied as latin electronic, crunk, and cumbia, all through the filter of some really cheap, shitty-sounding DAWs and synths. This is a really interesting album to digest, it's not a great one to actually listen to. It's a total cluster of ideas, in which too few actually stick, and the cheap-sounding synths, while an interesting concept, aren't executed well at all.
2.0+
Hype Williams - Untitled (2010) >hypnagogic pop
Good god, this is even more brilliant than Black Is Beautiful. I like Blunt's solo works, but Copeland just brings something extra to the table that makes for the most beautiful, serene, hazy hypnagogic pop I've ever heard. Funnily enough, this is arguably weakest when it's actually doing hypnagogic pop. It's good stuff, just stuff that's been done before. It's when the album spreads its wings into dubbier, folkier territory that this /really/ hits its stride. The ambient dub is beautiful, tropical, and wholly unique; the free folk is among the most hypnotic music I've heard this decade, it's incredible.

ECCO UNLIMITED - NHK Reminds You to Boost Your Signal (2012) >ambient, vaporwave
A unique take on vaporwave that isn't executed terribly well. As the album title suggests, this plays out like a broken, hazy radio broadcast, the producer choosing to add lots of sound effects like speakers turning on and channels going completely dead to add to the immersion. This level of detail is really great, and pretty much the only thing I like about this EP. The music itself is bottom of the barrel ambient, nothing about it grabs me at all, it just twists and turns around without ever latching onto anything that good. Simultanously too haphazard and too boring, which is a really unfortunate combination.

>Courtis/Moore - Brokebox Juke >Free Folk, Electroacoustic From small tinkerings to wide-mouthed drones, and a competent post-rock finale, there's a decent amount of content in just 7 tracks.
7+
>Thymolphtalein - Ni Maitre, Ni marteau >EAI Slightly jazzy, slightly electronic percussive Improv, from a supergroup of members Will Guthrie, Natasha Anderson, Clayton Thomas, Anthony Pateras, and Jerome Noetinger. Unsurprisingly sparse, but not as exceptional and built up as I'd hope it would be.
5
>Philip Samartzis & Rasmus B. Lunding - Touch Parking >Electroacoustic Swinging, piercing tones populate the beginnings of this, before devolving into a ritualistic dance. Panning, garbled samples seems to be something the pair liked to use in this, as well. The plunderphonic aspects add just a touch of melody to this, making it more accessible than just textures alone.
7
>Arsenije Jovanovic - Works for Radio >Musique concrete, Radio play More drama than music. Immersive, often feeling like you're watching a subterranean ceremony, but ultimately not meant to be taken as an album. Without knowing the language, listening to this isn't worth your time.
4+
>Alvin Curran - Endangered Species >Electroacoustic, Plunderphonics A good standard for sound collage, balancing the zaniness that comes from using familiar human sounds with bitter unconventional sources. Moments like combining an auctioneer announcer with Busdriver - Imaginary Places, Aphex Twin - Windowlicker being put to a sax and drill, elevators and jazz, peaceful and heavy moments all within the hour. It ends with an electronic heartbeat parallel tithe opening.
7+
>Fletcher Pratt - Selected Works (2015-2016) >Electroacoustic, Modern Classical A huge exhibition of digital and classical nature. It seems that Pratt leans towards electronics in the latter part of this compilation.
Favorite tracks: Visitor, Having Eaten Enough Sadness, VR Lake 8
what a way to go
thx

>P-Model - In a Model Room Very energetic album, interesting rhythms, really not much to say, I guess this was Japan's main answer to bands that were doing the same synth-punk thing in the USA, a fun record overall. 5.5
accelebration was better
Hudson Martinez
Even Keiji Haino's new album is making fun of Americans for being retarded.

>5.5 for model room >6.5 for syre wew
part of the charm of crampton's music is the shitty daws to me. i absolutely get how it's a turnoff, but it gives it a weirdly unique atmosphere for something so intricately produced.
Jaxon Nelson
>it gives it a weirdly unique atmosphere for something so intricately produced. fair point, i just think she does it better on that one E+E ep
yknow she played near me a couple weeks ago, missed out and i regret it

pretty good Surprisingly smooth and non-bittery for a charcoal porter. I tend towards the very strong imperial stouts for darker beers, but this is a very nice subtle alternative; makes me wish i was done with exams and curled up beside the fireplace with a nice book.

/f - pq:f (2014) >glitch
The best glitch album I've ever heard, without a doubt. There are so many layers to the sound here, underneath the standard glitchiness you can hear noise, techno, sound collages, there's so much going on yet the compositional genius of the glitch always powers through. The few tracks that delve into pure techno are incredible as well, retaining that composition genius while still managing to totally bang, along with the tracks towards the beginning that flirt with nu jazzy styles. This is exceptional.
3.5
JΛSMINE - Why Don't You Wash Your Blond Child's Hair in Dead Champagne, As They Do in France? (2014) >bubblegum bass, UK bass
Spotty mix with some really wonderful highs. I love the bubblegum bass here, it's what I've always wanted bubblegum bass to be—effervescent and fun yet cerebral and forward-thinking, it's done incredibly well. All the other genre attempts here don't fair nearly as well, and the mix isn't as cohesive as it should be. An entertaining thirty minutes.
2.5
Félicia Atkinson - A Readymade Ceremony (2015) >electroacoustic, ambient
Like a more experimental Holly Herndon, and gosh, I really don't like Holly Herndon's music. This ASMR vocal style gets on my nerves /so/ much, I pretty much automatically dislike this album because of that. And while Atkinson might construct some eerie, industrial soundscapes beneath the spoken word vocals, she rarely lets them move beyond one tone or timbre, it's all irritatingly static.

Hi daily, haven't been posting in a while but I finally finished this chart (was one of the best ones I ever had).
Darondo – Listen to My Song: The Music City Sessions (1973/4; 2011) >Soul, Funk I mean just look at the guy on the cover, of course it’s gonna be good. A fantastic mix of 70ies soul and funk, this is one the rare cases where something that’s praised as a lost classic fulfills all expectations. Great bass lines (that solo on Get Up Off Your Butt!), and even the ballads are pretty great (Didn’t I is amazing). The recording quality is a bit lackluster though. 4/6
Also, I need a hip hop rec for my next chart (preferably something under 1h)
Mason Hernandez

we back on that old fashioned new hot style calendar bullshit, fuck with it yeah boys let's go
WE GOT A 5 BOYS A 5/10, THAT IS >paul bley- open to love recommended by jangle this album is pleasant, dialed back jazz that is really forgettable. it became background music really quickly. I am always wary of solo instrumental works-- I had really low expectations for Fare Forward Voyagers the first time I heard it, but record proved to be lively and have a surprisingly wide field of sounds. apart from the occasional humming from Bley while he played, it's very simple. I can't feel one way or the other about this album. it's boring, but if you pay close attention, it can be interesting. It really relies on the listener to engage, instead of engaging the listener.
>King Crimson - Lizard Side Lizard is a very favorable 4/5, balancing jazz and modern classical influences with rock songwriting and melodies. And Jon Anderson's voice is so much better than the emulation of Greg Lake that Haskell does on side A. This order of things reminds me a lot of Brain Salad Surgery, where the a-side is balooney and the b-side is sublime prog. Though "Lizard" doesn't stand a chance against "Karn Evil 9".
>Letov, duh kek
Already heard Eye Chant, just forgot to rate it.

I'm going on a trip to New Orleans in a few weeks, anybody got some recs for me? So far I've only heard The Meters, Dr. John and Lee Dorsey. Where to start with Louis Armstrong?
