In cities the biggest part of people live in apartments, part of them inside building complexes, but out of town you can find many houses.
The Italian guy may come from a big city and it's not used to live in a "ground level" house, it's not that he doesn't know how to do it.

It's not, the 'houses' are basically just apartment sized living spaces, it's one of the only things that blows about living in the UK. My apartment here in Denver feels/is bigger than most of the 'houses' I went into when I was doing my study abroad over there.
