If the South broke off from the US, it would still be one of the largest economies in the world, with a higher GDP than most European countries.
It also contains a large number of nukes, most of the military hardware (tanks especially), most of the oil reserves, and a ridiculous percentage of active and former military. It is, in every sense, already a country within a country.
