Chinese definitely is harder than a lot of other languages, but korean isn't gonna be the easiest either since both are very different from western languages. Chinese might be like 1.5 times as hard as korean.

Even with 1500 most frequently used characters (not even knowing words or grammar rules) you'll be able to understand basic meaning of most of sentences, and chinese grammar ain't really hard
Also, you forgot that you don't have to learn how to write a language to learn it...

I can confirm this to be true for Japanese (didn't even take me a full year), and I wager Chinese is similar in difficulty. Doing things properly means:
>Input over output.
>Daily vocab practice using SRS (like Anki)
>Serious grammar study
>Regular listening practice using full speed native material
The last point sounds counter-intuitive if your goal is to read well, but it is really important because the sheer speed of authentic dialogue forces you advance from deciphering/translating to understanding directly. Of course you'll need to practice reading as well (and a lot of it), but listening fluency transfers to reading fluency once character recognition becomes fast enough.

This is of course important overall but not as much for reading newspapers. Like it does transfer but if literally all you care about is reading newspapers then I wouldn't recommend it.. Of course who the fuck wants to read newspapers but not be able to talk or listen.
Also I think it's better to start out with Spoonfed Chinese (and maybe some chinese music or something), then move up to Chinesepod (uuper intermediate and above)/popupchinese and other things that are in full chinese, but intended for learners, watch a bunch of drama or tv with chinese subtitles, and by the time Chinesepod stops feeling super difficult and you are mostly done with Spoonfed Chinese then actual native listening will start feeling less impossible. VoA podcasts are pretty good for news listening if you are like most people here and know more about american politics than Chinese politics.

Thank you. Thank you to all the people on making me feel so welcome and making me fall in love with Taiwan. What a beautiful country also, the mountains the beaches the city, everything is so beautiful there. I spent 3 months in Taipei, Hualien, Taitung, kenting and all the small towns in between! I felt so safe all of the time. I can't wait to come back, I'm already planning a trip back to Taiwan. The food, oh the food, it's so delicious, so many night markets and so many places to get food, it's heaven. I tried to pick up a bit of mandarin but it wasn't too great, but I still got the things I wanted. I'm studying mandarin now cause I fell inlove with the language, I talked to a lot of locals to get my head around it and I find it so fascinating! Thank you, I'll see you soon :)
