That said, I think Ascension is great because of the skill and communal compromise that went into making it. At no point does it feel like one musician is trying to outshine another. They're clambering towards a final goal with ao many interpretations of the same vague idea and showing as much restraint or aggression as they need to WHEN they need to. I'm not a jazz guy generally, but this album is the tops.
