I've walked out on a job before, so did many people I know. Same day, no problem. If you are a doctor or something similar it's different. What people who do get into those situation do? Go to the doc tell him and play sick for three months and still get paid.

Over here in Quebec if you are fired, your employer must gives you either 2 weeks advanced notice, or 2 weeks pay.
If you quit a job, you don't need to give ANY advanced notice, but it's looked down upon to do so and you probably won't get a good reference from the job you quit if you do so. Generally speaking it's considered polite to give 2 weeks advanced notice. More if you would be required to provide training for your replacement. But again, it's not an obligation.
There is nothing to be proud of. It pisses me off that I can't quit my job whenever I want. If I were an employer it would probably piss me off that I cannot fire an employee whenever I want. The state should never meddle into the job market. That's why we have so much unemployment and why younger persons without experience cannot find a job : because employers are reluctant to hire new persons if they aren't 100% sure they'll keep them. Face it, socialism is bullshit, and the success of the american economy compared to our failing ones is another proof of this.
Unions are demonized around here for similar reasons. Employers don't like listening to some union head tell them how to run their company. Employees don't like effectively having two bosses that can fuck with your job.

At my last kitchen job the owner always played hell hiring new people. Every time a new position opened up, there was always at least one lazy nig newbie who either got fired or quit the next day.
