used to have this on repeat when i was 14
should probably listen to it again, havent for a while
remember it being a bit grim

This album always confused me. Music is for the most part quite upbeat and sort of happy sounding, but the lyrics are among the darkest I've ever heard

4st 7lb is so depressing its actually pretty funny, especially all the parts about roast beef and kit kats

It's an amazing album
Extremelly melodic and quotable

The humour in their lyrics is underrated desu

>someone somewhere soon will take care of you. I repent, I'm sorry everything is falling apart

Brezhnev married into group sex!

"He's a boy, you want a girl so tear off his cock, tie his hair in bunches, fuck him, call him rita if he wants" what did they mean by this?

Richey was a trap before it was cool. Also the whole song was based on a documentary about the sex trade they watched.

Great, great album. This and John Cale's Music for a New Society are joint in my eyes for most depressing album of all time. What is it about the Welsh that makes them so miserable?
Also, it's weird for me to think that a band as leftist as Manic Street Preachers did a song like PCP or Archives of Pain being as a band with the same politics would likely be pilloried by the press for doing likewise today. It's not even that I think what's expressed in those songs are incompatible with Marxist/Socialist thinking, just that I would imagine if they were made today we'd end up with a couple of thinkpieces on them.

>Welsh that makes them so miserable?
Have you been to Wales? While they were certainly lefty they were more about using leftwing iconography as a fashion statement. They were certainly more nuanced than some political bands.

>What is it about the Welsh that makes them so miserable?

>be welsh
>open window to let in some fresh air
>300 metric tonnes of unprocessed coal rush in and bury your entire family instantly

It's one of my favorite albums ever but man, I really can't understand what he's singing about. Still, does anybody know a band where the vocals are in this way? I don't even know how to describe it.

>Digits
So close

Anyway amazing buttrock but buttrock nonetheless

the cover is still awful

but yea, incredible album

US vs UK mix?

To be fair, the singer was not the one who wrote the vocals. Richey wrote the lyrics but none of the manics could sing except for james (who used to have and incredible range) and James often humorously remarks that richey didn't care how james was supposed to sing so many syllables or how he was supposed to craft a melodic song around them because his lyrics were so meticulously written

best album by a britpop artist, even though they didn't become that until after this I guess. only Suede's Dog Man Star is as good I'd say

>Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart
>when you try to make a political statement but you make a baby-tier typo in the song title and end up looking like idiots

Wasn't the album supposed to depict how richey seen himself? despite the fact he was anorexic

>missing the backwards R's
we get it, you're triggered

imagine being this autistic lmao

>it is world would fall apart

oh, is that so? I didn't know that. I just think the design doesn't fit the sound at all

WE ARE
A AAA

Anything similar to this? Upbeat album with depressing lyrics

How have I not heard this.

This article sums why the manics are like they are. I'm actually from their hometown.

Ever meet them?

dude you're lucky, I wish I could experience this masterpiece for the first time again.

No I have n't but I have relatives who knew Richey's parents. They said he was a really nice but shy kid.

Do people in the area reckon he's still alive?

UK is more post punk and US is more glam/hard rock
Both have their cases but I prefer the UK mix since I think it suits the aesthetic of the album more

The cover's not awful but i wouldnt have it displayed in my house
Still the goat album of this type

#

Ive never met anyone who thinks he's still alive. He was very fucked up when he disappeared.

T-There are different mixes?

What do you think yourself? There are loads of stories of sightings

I distinctly remember listening to this for the first time. In my room in a cold February night when I was 16 and not really knowing what to expect
Had a pretty profound impact on me

I don't know if the US mix was released at the time, but it's included as the second disc of the 10th anniversary edition. I think it's just the levels of the instruments rather than anything extremely dramatic with the mixes. Both are pretty good, though I think the band prefer the US mix for giving it a bit more punch.

Everything Everything

I think he's gone. If he's still alive I hope he found inner peace. I quite like living in this area, there's a real sense of community and pride. I really like people's sense of humor here too. The trees are starting to grow back from the mines now

Pinkerton, I guess
Big Star's 3rd to an extent
Honestly though, it's pretty hard to find anything else like it

eh, they're newest album was kinda disappointing imo

but get to heaven is a masterpiece and totally feels like a spiritual successor to msp

Tbh thb is a really unique album. I don't think I've heard an album blend post punk and glam rock like this one does. Not to mention the vocals and the lyrics.

Not really
If you like the guitars on it though, I'd suggest you check out the Skids, James owes quite a bit to their guitarist, I'd say, they've sung their praises a few times over the years

>in the beginning, when we were winning, when our smiles were genuine

>they're

I'm retarded ignore me

Fucking fantastic album. Its that one album that an artist or band has where everything comes together and doesn't just blend seamlessly but the elements actually work off each other. A one of a kind lyrical masterpiece

I need a cigarette, this was one of the most positive finds in atleast five years.

I'm 28 with two kids and a wife. They're out Christmas shopping while I'm working on Azure platform migrations for work in my pitch quiet dark house, the only lights being my work screens. It's been so long since I've had an experience like this.

Thank you OP, I wish I had more to offer than that.

If your experience from here on out is anything like mine was when I first heard it, you won't be able to put it down for a good month or two. That's what happened to me this past spring, and after that I went back to my normal listening habits pretty much, but every now and again recently I'll have a moment with one track or another. So I hope you're ready for that.

>If White America Told the Truth for One Day It's [sic] World Would Fall Apart
what did he mean by this???

I never liked James Dean Bradfield's vocals much but yeah this album is great and brutal

Problem is diet's not a big enough word

I want to walk in the snow and not leave a footprint, I want to walk in the snow and not soil its purity...

Difficult when mother's trying to choke you with roast beef while sitting savouring her sole ryvita

4st 7lb is my favourite song on it next to Die in the Summertime. And maybe Faster.

Good album, but I just think Everything Must Go is their best album.

Reading the lyrics along with the songs is fun. There is a special skill in singing lyrics that should not flow.

It's cool because they are so different. Like Everything must go is the anti-holy bible with its more pop sounding songs but its still, in many ways, equally as good. To anyone who knows of the manics but not really much more, everything must go will be their most recognisable and accessible work, where as die hard fans will nearly always say holy bible. Its kinda sad that their biggest success came after their darkest period and after richey went missing

Who the fuck are these guys and what the fuck is this album?
