o damn. i didn't know about the ND poll. thanks for the heads up OP. i already voted in the savingcountrymusic poll. don't forget about that one if you haven't already chimed in on that site as well.

>Beck - Colors
I know it's just props for going folk on "Morning Phase" but really?

the pbs station out of colorado is airing an emmylou harris concert after this nitty gritty dirt band concert. my evening's booked solid. :)

I saw Emmylou play live in Atlanta a few years back. Truly great.

Only new country or country-related album I've listened to this year is Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - The Nashville Sound. What else should I be listening to?

i had a chance to see steve earle, joan baez, patty griffin and james mcmurtry on the lampedusa tour in october but i had work and i was low on funds so i skipped it. really regretting that decision.

Once saw steve earle just 20 minutes down the road from popcorn sutton's old haunt. People were nuts there, going crazy when he played guitar town, going "hogwild" during Copperhead Road. this one dude kept screaming "dixie".

if you liked the isbell album check out the new john moreland and the rod melancon.

guitar town reminds me of working the concession stand at the dances for my dad's band.

Sure thing.

Anything by qt country grills (or gothic country/gothic americana grills)?

Along with The Nashville Sound, other good stuff from 2017:

Margo Price - All American Made (my favorite album of the whole year)
Tyler Childers - Purgatory
Chris Stapleton - From A Room: Vol. 1 (Vol. 2 is solid but not quite as good)
Angaleena Presley - Wrangled
Steve Earle & the Dukes - So You Wannabe an Outlaw
Colter Wall - s/t
John Moreland - Big Bad Luv
Lydia Loveless - Boy Crazy and Single(s)

I wonder if Angaleena Presley's got Jordan Powell pussy whipped.

I've started collecting cassettes. Any good country, bluegrass, or Americana albums released on tape this year?

New Jake Xerxes Fussell is quite quite good. I only knew him because of the William Tyler connection, but I finally gave him a shot today.

Nothing at all against Turnpike Troubadours, but I don't know why everyone is so hot on their new album.

Iron and Wine back catalog cassette releases
New Lee Hazlewood reissue on Light and the Attic comes with a cassette copy
New Margo Price "All American Made" is out on cassette from Third Man
Hiss Golden Messenger live at the 9:30 Club 4/22/2017
Six Organs Of Admittance - Burning The Threshold
Bonnie Prince Billy - Best Troubador

Thanks! I love noise rock and synthwave, but I was looking to expand my collection a bit.

Speaking of cassettes and Steve Earle, the cassette versions of Copperhead Road and Guitar Town are fucking great and awesome from driving to. The CDs that got pressed in the early 90s sound horribly tinny and the remastered versions have more low end but are really compressed, but the cassette version is super dynamic and immersive.

Anything else like this?

Sharon Jones
Leon Bridges
St. Paul & The Broken Bones
Alabama Shakes' first album
Chris Stapleton
Mavis Staples
That first Fitz and the Tantrums album

sweet dude, thanks

Has anybody mixed country and electronic music in a way that ISN'T a shitty cash-grab?

cotton eye joe duh
idk like stuff of of moby's play
other "folktronica" that leans toward more twangy bluegrassy stuff

Ha, I forgot about Cotton Eyed Joe.

I was trying to imagine something with like, electro-house influences. I'll look into "folktronica" though.

Best country song of 2017:

(I'm sorry.)

fav release this year was Jake Xerxes Fussell - What in the Natural World

his cover of pinnacle mountain is ungodly beautiful youtube.com/watch?v=MG6_CDRdVN4

Are there any good country labels to follow if I want decent music that isn't "radio country," or is all the good stuff 100% independent?

Rounder records

...

tompkins square

what the fuck

who are you
I am friends with the bachmans

Who are you? And why haven't I seen you around these parts before.

I am usually reserved to the /daily/ threads

I fuckin dated sarah lol, still good friends with all of em
that post just through me for a fuckin loop

Hahaha holy shit I actually met Daniel in Waynesville North Carolina about a week ago

no shit, how did you run into him?

he just got back in town, gonna see him tomorrow

Just on the street haha.

Where's he living nowadays? Durham?

no, he was living in petesburg va p much all last year
recently moved back to fredericksburg but he's moving back to pburg soon

Nice nice. Any new recorded material coming soon?

oh yeah

I actually helped him install ableton a month back lol cuz he wants to mix this record himself

on the day of the charlottesville shit I remember we were driving around southern virginia recording distorted radio evangelists on his iphone. He said that stuff is going on the new record.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to it.

My extended family does a CD swap every year, so I'm for sure putting in Jake's new record in there (and maybe "River" too, but he'll for sure be in there next year)

Big up Smithsonian Folkways

jake is so fucking good

he played a show at my house with daniel a few months back, his recordings don't even compare to him live. he's got such a subtle and emotive picking style. I hghly recommend seeing him live

Yeah, I missed him this time around, though my friend in Decatur Ga saw him play at Eddie's Attic. Apparently one of the Indigo Girls was in attendance, keeping a low profile in the back.

Avant roots music is going to come back in a big way

...

Examples?

I know this is pretty pop-country, but I actually don't think they're half bad.

This song/video was one of the things that made me realize I like strong, assertive women, especially if they're singing triumphantly/defiantly.

(It was also one of my first whyboners.)

Well just look at There's a very tightknit scene there of musicians, most of whom are growing in popularity and critical acclaim.

You linked the same post both times.
