trusting the wind is not a sport

LE AMERICAN MERCENARIES BTFO

>le billionaire hydro cycles

Grats, Kiwis.

Knowing how to use the wind is the important thing.

A billion dollars is just ~0.8% of our GDP. Seems like a lot, but for USA it is 0.000005%.

You can say billionaires find the sport, but you have to consider how much we punch about our weight and perform above average.

It really is impressive when you consider how much money Larry Fuckface has to throw around, and how he's assembled a team of mercenaries, and then a team of local Kiwi boys can come and absolutely destroy them. And of course Larry completely changed the way these boats are developed for his own benefit, essentially pricing out all the competition.

Of course I'm not saying you guys don't have lots of financial backers too (I just noticed that Emirates essentially sponsor every single form of sport in the entire world - they must be one of the world's largest sports sponsors, besides kit manufacturers), but still, given how Larry completely controlled this thing with an iron grip for the last 7 years, I think it's amazing to see the Kiwis come in and take it, especially since it was with homegrown talent.

What boats will the Kiwis come up with now? Will they take it back to traditional yachts? I guess probably not since all the teams (including themselves) have invested so much in this new technology.

Also I hope BAR can win next time. I live near Portsmouth where their new base is. I'd absolutely fucking love it if they won. Homegrown victory.

Thanks mates. Its beersies for breakfast here!!

BAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Enjoy it while it lasts, that's all I'll say.

And watch your back. Closely.

Ainslie is too old now. He shouldn't have raced this year. He fucked up so bad.

I didn't know he sponsored tennis

Sorry I don't speak wetback

Bullshit. How did he fuck up? BAR won the World Series thingy, and then they did pretty damn well in the LV Cup when you consider that they lost two races to NZ purely because of mechanical failure

BAR only won the world series because Burling and Tuke went to the Olympics, TNZ was leading before that. That 2 extra points should have helped them win but they came 5th.

>Mechanical failure
Probably because the shore crew was too busy repairing the boat every time Ainslie ploughed it into somebody else, instead of making improvements.

is this the brazilian sopa thread?

...

...

apart from buying the indian wells tournament, where did he invest in tennis development?

>tfw >we didnt choke

>every time Ainslie ploughed it into somebody else
Didn't know that. All the info I said is what I read on Wikipedia by the way so I didn't watch it at the time

Still, the fact that BAR beat all those other teams is a good sign

At least, I hope it is

What do you reckon NZ will do with the rules? I watched the press conference at the end of today, it seemed like they will probably go with similar boats to what there currently is, and presumably there will be some sort of challenger series since they said other clubs will be able to challenge. Also I found it interesting when they said something like "we want to make changes which are in the interest of the sport, not ones that necessarily just benefit us" - why not just benefit themselves? That's what I would do in that situation. Maybe they want to be seen as a more "genuine" outfit than Oracle® Team USA™ though.

tonight I feel a good wind comin on

Ben almost killed some of the Japan crew.

Yeah I think BAR are in good spot relatively speaking and look decent for the future. They squeaked out a win in the Youth america's cup over Team NZ. TNZ won 3 races in the second day and would have won if Germany didn't shit the bed in the final race, but thats me just being salty.

>What do you reckon NZ will do with the rules?
Very little indication. Grant Dalton mentioned that the catamarans are very good for spectators, and it will be a hard sell to move away from foiling and the speed they bring but he said that they want to bring it back to proper sailing and not just pushing hydraulic pressure around the boat. He said they'll talk to Luna Rossa and other parties.

>why not just benefit themselves?
Not the kiwi way I suppose. The current format was weighed to heavily toward Oracle. The other teams signing on to keep the current format is a cuck move, which simply indicated that none of the other teams would really try and win it this year, potentially because they aren't as established as TNZ. TNZ won because their motivation was taking back the power from Oracle, whereas the other teams had already signed on to keep power with oracle even if they beat them.

>land rover badge
>being any good.
Pick one

Also, I think naming the team "BAR" was a big mistake. It should have been Team GB. There is too much emphasis on Ainslie. I know he's a great sailor and icon, but it doesn't really make much sense when he's off the boat. Ideally he won't be sailing next time. AC is a young mans game, and he spreads himself too thin, he's the skipper, helmsman and team CEO. It's problematic because it's hard for the rest of the team to be critical of his decisions.

>Very little indication. Grant Dalton mentioned that the catamarans are very good for spectators, and it will be a hard sell to move away from foiling and the speed they bring but he said that they want to bring it back to proper sailing and not just pushing hydraulic pressure around the boat.
Yeah I remember that bit. I guess they could bring back sails, trimming them with ropes, instead of all the fancy electronics/hydraulics to trim the wing. I mean the wing is faster isn't it... but I'm sure sails could still generate the speeds for foiling

Fuck off

True, although I read a thing where he said it's more about a British team winning it than it is about him steering the boat that wins it. But obviously he WANTS to be steering the boat and he'll obviously find it hard to pull himself away from that, and who are the other team members to tell him he has to step away?

So yeah you have a point

I still don't get it

>who are the other team members to tell him he has to step away?
Just anybody in the team, like if he wants something designed a certain way, the specialists who are doing testing and know better may not be able to correct him. Or on the boat, somebody may not question his tactics.

Those sorts of things are important in this event. TNZ doesn't have any one guy like that and all the roles are spread out and specialized.

Sorry that's what I meant, I was asking it rhetorically, just saying that - like you said - it will be hard for them to challenge Ben because of his status etc. But then again think about it, he's probably in that job because of the sponsorship. He's a big name in this country and so he can really pull British fans to the sport. But yes like you say maybe it will be a hindrance. I think you do have a point and perhaps it would be better if it was just "Land Rover Team Britain" or something, so that the best talent made it in regardless of reputation. In fact just thinking of the England football team, you could say we have a bit of a record on using athletes because of reputation instead of form, and it hasn't really worked out well for us...

Anyway I hope it works better next time, from what I've read and seen, the team seems to have a hell of a lot of financial backing and a lot of great talent too so I think it will be awesome to see if we can put on another great challenge next time which I'm sure we'll do.

I thought British American Racing was back at first.

I think you guys have enough sailing talent to be competitive, the difference may be in boat design. I'm not sure if BAR put much effort into it compared with other teams, but now seeing how radical TNZ was with their design, you'll employ some good people from britain.

Dan Bernasconi was really the mastermind behind the TNZ boat and an underrated reason why they won. He's an fluid dynamics/aerodynamics professor who has been working with the McLaren F1 team in the past. I'm sure you have guys like that floating around that could be repurposed for sailing.

Yeah same that's what I thought.

>He's an fluid dynamics/aerodynamics professor who has been working with the McLaren F1 team in the past. I'm sure you have guys like that floating around that could be repurposed for sailing.
That's the thing, Ben said in one of the press conferences I watched that BAR had specifically hired some people from F1, and of course F1 is almost entirely based in Britain (8 of the 10 teams have at least one base here - 5 of the 10 teams are fully based here). So that's definitely a massive asset we have and we should definitely use it.

Also I asked this in the other thread but just wondering, does the Challenger of Record get any special rights or anything? Above any other challengers? Or I guess we will only know that when NZ determine the rules regarding how other syndicates can challenge, right?

>does the Challenger of Record get any special rights or anything
Nah not that I'm aware. I assume it's possible for the defender to do so but it's not the norm. I guess this time Oracle had a technology sharing agreement with Team Japan where they shared most of their designs. It was pretty unusual and was seen as basically a move to give Oracle spare parts/boat and extra testing ability.

TNZ and Luna Rossa were pretty close in 2013, they had an agreement to work together but that made more sense because they were challengers and both just wanted to beat Oracle. The Luna Rossa principal really hated Ellison and thats why they didn't have a team in this edition.

The info around the next americas cup is going to be revealed in 2 weeks.

wanted BAR or NZ to win so i am happy

US could fuck right off for all i cared even considering they said they'd keep the cup here next time

this country doesn't deserve to host another big event considering >we are about to elect the dindu party again and fall into financial ruin like when they took us from a surplus into a billion shekel deficit

Did you go watch any races?

Also what's your beef with Oracle? Did you like the format? What sort of racing should TNZ have next time?

yeah i was a marine bolice for the early part of it

as a sailor i don't like the format or the boats - i'd prefer single hull fleet racing ideally but i'd settle for just single hull match racing

i don't see it ever happening again though because of them trying to market the sport as f1 on the water (constantly bigging up speed and such)

as for oracle i just don't care for burgers in general, so if i can support my home country or kin then thats obviously the choice il make
