Kino.

IV had a more cohesive story but V was more immersive.

>IV had a more cohesive story.
Now I have heard it all.

No game has better portrayed the confusion and lack of physical control of growing old than IV. It used the medium to show the frustration of being unable to do the things we want and the story to make us wonder if everything we were seeing was just a trick of our fraying and decaying mind. IV is an immaculate postmodern masterpiece integrating gameplay into an actual act of empathy towards people with infirmities or Alzheimer's.

II almost reached those heights but instead focused more on a metafictional slant, while I, III, and V scaled back that postmodern aspect for a more traditional action game with a solid story.

Sure, I agree. I rarely find people who like IV in the Internet. About III, it is basically a Bond film. You can barely recognize it as a Metal Gear Solid game in my opinion. V has notable postmodern "slant" to it, more so than III or I.

What's your boxd account?

PTAbro but too much Sup Forums to watch Sup Forums these days so lb is pretty sparse. Still enjoy reading these threads occasionally though.

Tell me about the postmodern slant you found in V though - I did enjoy the abundance of audio tapes to underscore the plot's focus on language but other than that it felt fairly straightforward to me.

let's have a discourse
*unzips dick*

...

Well for starters there's the player character that actually makes the Big Boss legend "come alive". At the start of the game Ahab (Big Boss) addresses the player character by telling him to "press Action Button" - directly addressing V as a game - then again this is apparent on most big title MGS games since 1 (and where the "it is all a VR program" meme comes from?).

More importantly, from the start of the game Kojima addresses the fact that you are the creator of the legend and deconstructs the character of Big Boss's legend. You are actively involved and part of the story. Of course - this is common theme in most MGS games.

A little something about MGS2 - a subversion of expectations for a sequel. A complete ruse in every aspect from trailers, marketing to gameplay and narrative. We get to play Raiden raised on video games and wanting to be Snake (like the player, and like Venom in V wants to be BB). Raiden has a happier end though.

In V the player is actively involved in the events of the game as an actual stand-in for Big Boss. When the game ends Big Boss (Kojima) thanks you for your service and says the legend of Big Boss belongs to the player. Venom Snake and the player both get duped by Kojima/Big Boss. Venom Snake is a walking hypocrisy - tries to act like a hero because Big Boss's legend is a hero in his mind. Brings home puppies and makes them war dogs, brings home children and makes them mercs.

and I wonder how deeply you can read to all of the phantom pain stuff and news about the troubled production. For example Venom's arc ends at 43 - but there's cut content that ruins his narrative (51).

>post limit.
fuck you Sup Forums

>getting doxed

Don't think so.

>and I wonder how deeply you can read to all of the phantom pain stuff and news about the troubled production. For example Venom's arc ends at 43 - but there's cut content that ruins his narrative (51).

And I do believe that part of giving the player a phantom pain and leaving them dissatisfied were intentional. Not getting to THE BIG BOSS, not getting to serve revenge on skullface in a great fight. Can't judge the cut content though. It might the most meta meme of all time in a big title game if it was intentional, if it was commentary on the nature of the game.

It is really hard to guesstimate if these are faults or just risky attempt at post modern narrative about gaming.

And this is probably why V is so decisive as a game.

Do you want an invite to our discord or would you rather keep your IQ where it's at?

...

All good points - I suppose my only argument is that, like you said, the protagonist proxy had been done before with Raiden so while Venom is a much more interesting and tragic character, he doesn't feel as surprising as 2 did. I do get the urge weekly to replay the game with a fresh save as my playthrough was framed by my understanding of 1-31 being the core story and everything after as an epilogue or footnote so I subconsciously regarded things afterwards has having less canonical significance. I am convinced that was Kojima's intention as well, but have no facts to back that up so it's purely a gut thing. As for 51 I've seen the footage and it is a nice bridge to MGS1 but I don't think it's integral to the core story as everything after 31 becomes less about Venom and more about the peripheral characters and how Kojima wanted to establish a continuity, however shaky, with the earlier titles.

Regardless, the gameplay is extremely polished and the direction (for the most part) is very 'kino'; both IV and V are unfairly maligned due to external circumstances i.e. audience expectations (which Kojima has clearly in the past intended to subvert) and PR hype (which he had no control over due to the assumed growing rift with Konami).

If you've seen the amount of capeshit and general garbage I've been watching lately you'd agree that my IQ is scraping the bottom of the barrel as it is.

>I do get the urge weekly to replay the game with a fresh save
I'm on my first replay of the game and I find it a lot better than on my first playthrough. The gameplay/the game engine and its possibilities are amazing and allows for a lot of creativity.

>protagonist proxy had been done before with Raiden so while Venom is a much more interesting and tragic character, he doesn't feel as surprising as 2 did
Indeed it doesn't. Most people already guessed the ruse before the release. But then again, what exactly does surprise like MGS2? That was some shit they pulled off.

About Venom - MGS2 was partly about meme theory and how we preserve and pass them through media (like games) and Venom/player is the one that has had "Big Boss memes" forced upon him. Unlike Raiden that finds meaning of his own (and doesn't adopt the Solid Snake memes), Venom completely submits to them. Venom is Big Boss except for the times when he isn't BB at all - that's what makes him so interesting. Torn between the man and the legend of Big Boss. Much like Bowie and Ziggy.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Raiden comparison is unfair - because while it might share the same player/avatar/character narrative to some extent it takes different turns. Where Raiden turned right, Venom turned left..

and the Skulls soldiers are interesting. IIRC Kojima has said zombie-likes wont exist in MGS but there we see, them, zombie-likes.

This doesn't get enough traffic to be a general anymore. Just delete it, it's taking up valuable space which could be used for superhero movies and Star Wars threads.

It's just a thread for plebs like Jacob and Machill to post Twitter updates.

And it will be replaced with nothing but more shitposting and empty thread bumps. Maybe if we're lucky Jacob will come back to tell us he saw a new movie.

good call on lobster. anyone know if dogtooth is better?

>How's the squid and the whale?
i didn't rate it because i didn't feel like i'd settled my thoughts fully after a single watch. i'll probably watch it again sometime within the week. first impression was positive though.

I haven't seen The Lobster, but as far as Dogtooth goes, it's fine, not mindblowing by any stretch of the imagination.

skip the lobster.
