Austria was one of the great powers. So the main powers in the east were Austria, Prussia and Russia after they partitioned Poland. Then after WWI it was part of the treaty that Austria and Germany couldn't combine. And these days they don't want to.
Switzerland idk. I'd like to know though. But I'm betting it would be something to do with their neutrality and the fact that having a stable country with its own laws in the middle of Western Europe is good for both stability and business.

I think to be fair that WWI marked the rise of an independent Australian identity. So pre WWI we were just a colony and post we were Australia.
Every country has its own rhetoric and national identity and thankfully Australia doesn't really get up to much.

Because the army was never upgraded and Spain was dragged into constant wars. The US won the war against Spain simply because Spain was fighting with shitty technology from the 1700s. Napoleon took Spain quickly because the king gave him access to invade Portugal but it backfired.
