I learned the meme way like you at first op years spent just playing bits of riffs the way to do it is to learn entire fucking songs. Aim for a new song a week and be able to play along with it entirely by weeks end. Runaway Trains a good first song.

Most of it is talent. Without that you need to be incredibly disciplined and practice very hard/properly. But really you need a good ear and rhythm, and also enjoy playing. If you don't have that you're sort of wasting your time imo,
