What a terrible year, holy shit

true

...

...

didn't listen to much that came out this year

This was good, the City of Caterpillar EP was phenomenal, Kelela's Take Me Apart is great, Taxenomicon was very good too.

good picks

Pretty not great year honestly but as always there were some great gems that flew under the radar for most people

mac really pulled it together this time. its like all the sweetest little parts of another one as an entire album but with new sounds, its so fresh

...

...

Hadn't heard of this, really nice rec user.

Finally got my AOTY physically today (Planning For Burial - Below The House)

La Torture des Tenebres

This has been a fantastic year for black metal

...

cmon you cant actually think this is the aoty

Am I the only one who's heard this? Haven't seen it posted at all but it's sooooo goood I think AOTY material

I can never do AOTY until next year but this got slept on and it's good

...

this is my pick, too. straight up masterpiece, i think. heres my no 2

good picks

...

this one
liked that one too

...

thanks for this i like

Fuck it's so good

Forgot pic

...

Whatever Death Grips releases tomorrow

comfy as fuck

I hear fewer than ten new albums this year but of the ones I did hear Imma say LCD Soundsystem

>bonus points for obscure releases
lol

I don't have a single AOTY so I'm gonna post more than one pick.
Loki - The Trigger Warning LP

such a fun album

ILEVENS - Transmitter

technically an EP, not a full length LP/album.

If you thought King Gizzard's microtonal forays this year were good, they weren't anything compared to this.

i just don't remember

Spotlights - Seismic

this was a good rec from someone else on Sup Forums

Pessimist - Pessimist

protomartyr - relatives in descent

Fucking loved MR. Though I had to go with LCDSS

What are some of the best idm / electronic of the year? It seems that every year it gets harder and harder to find good stuff.

Sevish - Harmony Hacker

xenharmonic electronic music.

Faex Optim - Look Around You

check out these 3
All quite different.
I'll try to post more.

...

Sonnig 991 - Mallsoft Odyssey

this

this

this

and finally, this

...

Reccing this hard

I'm heading off to the cinema in the next 10 mins so I can't post album covers separately, but more of my recs for releases this year.

Yomgaille - Repetition and Motion

My ambient recs for the year:
Wordclock - Heralds
Metatron Omega - Illuminatio
Northumbria - Markland
(yeah all 3 are Cryo Chamber releases, it's just what's good now)

Oliviaway - Proximity
and a bunch of other Oliviaway releases (embrace, dissolve, is life colorless? etc). My ultimate rec for anyone hyping Bengalfuel - Sadye.

On a similar note
Cousin Silas - Permutations

Technically not released this year, but re-issued with bonus tracks:
Biosphere - Shenzhou
Olan Mill - Cavade Morlem

Also technically not released for the first-time, but re-released this year

Dreamland Circus - Wonderphase

Production and the move away from the ambience killed this album for me which is a damn shame because Februus is my go to gold standard for atmospheric metal.

Is this actually worth getting? I have one of his releases, but all his songs really sound the same.

I love Reaper Mirror and it is also my aoty, but yeah, what a fucking awful year for music.

Thanks for the rec. I'll listen to them carefully, but now I am digging Mallsoft. Interesting stuff.

This.

This.
Didn't even know this band still existed, found out they had a new album just yesterday.

Nothing ground breaking came out. Its the '82 of the 21st century

How do you guys keep track and listen to everything that gets released in the current year?

Most of the time I find about new albums either through Rym, a recommendation here or through the Melon's videos (which only talk about well-known releases).

God this album is boring. When did mac get so uninspired?

like after salad days dude

I can't even think of any 2017 albums that deserves the title of AOTY. Such a weak year for music, unless you like pop-rap i guess.

There's more genres than shitty pop-rap.

Can’t believe no one’s really talking about this album. Pretty cool shit. Sounds like Master of Reality with three hits of liquid LSD plopped on it. Definitely rec it if you’re into groups like D Plan, White Reaper, Grateful Dead, Sabbath, GBV.

holy shit there was a godflesh album this year?!

i still resent being memed into listening to this trash

my nigga

...

been bumpin Jasss lately, but not AOTY
Still worth a listen

Yes and it's one of the best they've done since Streetcleaner

I like the recurring motifs and the vocals are nice and diverse, but the song is just too empty to be 85 minutes long. I understand that's doom, but throw in some subtle synth or some low strings somewhere. Kind of a drab listen for me.

If it isn't a grips take on k-pop I'll be piss

Yup

...

name?

...

Suck it nerds
2nd place

not aoty but honorable mention

was being dum, found it
(it's circular raesoning by pretend incase anyone else is dum and cant reverse image search)

also really liking it

never thought I’d see the day when I’d unironically say the sentence “this is a fucking incredible deathcore album,” but this is a fucking incredible deathcore album.

...

Here's my top 10

Just discovered this

youtube.com/watch?v=VnmjvFX36Pk
this was pretty good.

Go and record a masterpiece then

Great choice

here's a chart i was working on. sorry i don't feel like narrowing it down

This is great. Blackest Ever Black never disappoints.

>readsd the quietus and wire magazine once

I couldn't get halfway through that crap.

same

"There's usually at least a few metal albums every year that end up being really polarizing. They are usually loved by the "target audience" and tend to get enough traction that people outside of that group start taking notice, and the whole thing just blows wide open. These albums end up being either loved or hated, there really isn't a middle ground. Mirror Reaper by US funeral doom band Bell Witch is one such album."

>tfw barely any good zeuhl this year
