kan mikami.
Probably Haino, I guess. If I had to pick one anyway.
Speaking of which, I just got Milky Way on vinyl -- very cool very nice.
Tatsuro Yamashita is a god.

>Nobuo Uematsu
Non-vidja
>Dir en grey
Nobuo Uematsu should be self-explanatory given he's brought up in every video game and/or Japanese artist thread.
As for Dir en grey, they're an edgier Mr. Bungle.
not really as impressive as i made it sound, but we performed one of his pieces, in which 88 of us had to play a unique note on the same piano at the same time. actually required a shitton of preparation and is pretty much technically impossible to do, but Haino thought it was successful. we got to hang out with him too which was also nice.
Although I haven't delved too much into japanese music
ichiko aoba
I've actually been listening to a couple of Dir en Grey on YT, very very recently found them. Good taste with Uematsu, although for me Okabe (NieR) is really up there.
Tatsuro Yamashita
Okabe is great but he doesn't have a huge enough discography of consistent enough quality yet where I'd call him a national classic. Give it a decade and I'll probably change my mind.
I also like SOKEN, the incredibly prolific Final Fantasy XIV composer who seems to literally shit out songs, he's that quick.
Out of the way nerds
Fishmans or gtfo

Both good songs there.
My favorite is from their indies era

They've re-recorded it in recent years, doing it in their newer extreme metal style, but I honestly prefer the original version.

user who recently found them on YT, great recommendations. I admit I really like Obscure, but this is my current fave - youtube.com
I know the game is divisive, but some of the music from XV is also excellent. Yoko Shimomura makes some good stuff, Somnus is still great - youtube.com

My disappointment in Sup Forums taste is immeasurable.
Love me some Shiina. Muzai Moratorium is my favorite, although I haven't heard much of her later, more recent stuff, but what I've heard it's still good, I also liked the little I've heard of Tokyo Jihen.
Also, Kaoru from Dir en grey (the leader and main composer) is a self-proclaimed Shiina fanboy.
Too many jap artists I like are women; can anyone rec me good artists/bands with male vocalists?
They all sound the same or are just so japanesse :S
There were some posted itt already, but here's some more

Muzai Moratorium is great, I think 積木遊び (Tsumiki Asobi) is one of my all time top tracks.
Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana is GOAT, Shōso Strip is a close second. Give them a listen, if you haven't yet.
i fuck with you user. Ichiko is my current fav artist overall
