I grew up in rural south georgia and went to school at georgia tech in downtown atlanta where I worked and lived for 4 years with every group of Americans imaginable including tons of international students. I assure you that suicidal stupidity is present in every group and is not concentrated in any particular one. Sort of but the meaning has become warped. It was a reference to the West Virginia coal miners who had unionized and we're marching into southern West Virginia in solidarity with miners there. They wore red bandanas around their necks leading up to the Battle of Blair Mountain. It was early one synonymous with union member so kind of like calling someone a commie but well they were West Virginians so it came to be associated with the cultural aspect not the political aspect of them.

I think that most people overestimate the importance of economic issues for many voters. Many of us are single-issue, or at least just majorly focused on our pet issues.
