A semi-automatic rifle that fires an intermediate cartridge is a great defensive weapon. In combat your goal is not to play fair in sense that if your attacker has a pistol, you have to answer his aggression with a pistol as well. You want to stop that person from inflicting harm to you, and you want to do it as soon as possible, and as quickly as possible.

A rifle such as the AR15 pattern rifles, AKM pattern rifles, or anything similar allows you to have a better or at least equal chance in a fight.
