You need to take the time to find a reviewer who's taste generally aligns with your own and even then, when reading any particular review by them analyze whether you also agree with their reasons for liking or no liking a particular work.

the fact that this didn't come to any real use and had no utility in the end fight was really odd. Also the weird ending where the grandfather is robbed of his past and everyone is now going to live a lie around him? I found that disturbing. The casting was also really uninspired. McConaughey stands out like a sore thumb and Charlize Theron's super serious over articulated speech also stood out too much. I mean the animation was really cool, and I'll always appreciate things rooted in some myhological style, but I really don't think this film was as great as people seem to think.

this, I feel like people should get that the ratings are just a rought outline so that you avoid the absolute dogshit or if you really want to watch something that you know is going to be good if universally liked. But usually the works you enjoy the most are just above the 70% range. Same with other media as well. People who still play games only when it's 9.0 or more are doing it wrong.
