in season 9 the doctor created a stable time loop by creating a hologram to take his place so he wouldn't have to die, basically getting out of the "people saw it so now it has to happen" shit without causing a massive paradox

The bootstrap paradox has been used in the show several times.
A couple of others that come to mind:

Hell Bent improves on a re-watch by the way.
