Star Wars Despecialized Edition

Has anyone seen these editions? Wondering if they are worth downloading and which version to get as well.

No but I'd like to.

They, for me, are the definitive versions of Star Wars.

They're great.

This

only way to watch Star Wars.

just get the latest versions of each except RoJ, which I personally think harmy fucked up in the latest release.

RoJ 2.5 looks very little like the original sources and he crushed the blacks beyond necessary.

It lost all the detail in the shadows. in some frames there's just black pools of nothingness.

at least the "silver screen" version of star wars was fantastic.

in contrast, the normal version of empire strikes back is horrible: the added cgi is super obvious and cringey

Would you say it would be best to download a previous version? (if it is available that is) Noticed it looks darker in comparison clips he posted.

yeah get Despecialised 1.0 if you can find it. it didn't need improving to begin with.

He radically changed the color palette and everything. it's not good.

To preface, I have the 2006 Limited Edition trilogy DVD's with the shitty bonus disc laser disc transfers (I believe I have the unaltered VHS's somewhere as well)

I don't know how anyone could like them,.

The contrast is way too high and they look ugly

>It's another amateur color grading crushes the blacks episode
Why is this so fucking common?

>tfw the anti-Lucases are now pulling a Lucas.

Is this present in all the versions of the despecialized editions?

I still want to see III.5

It's like some kind of curse.

when you've been in control for so long the power goes to your head and you start making crazy decisions.

looks like it.

>what if, in this shot, we don't even see Vader's face!
>great idea, Harmy!

The 35mm scans are pretty good.

The only problem I had was with Vader's eyebrows. They did a terrible job restoring vader's eyebrows, they are blurry and float in front of his face. It's been a few years since I watched them so maybe they've fixed it by now.

Did he remove all of the added stuff from A New Hope? I swear there are some things in it I don't remember from the original I watched on VHS back in the 90s.

For example, I don't remember that brown shit on the ceiling of Uncle Owen's and Aunt Beru's dining room in the scene when they're discussing Luke joining the Academy.

it's better now

Reminder that if you don't watch the 2004 releases you're a fucking idiot.

>Corrected audio
>Replaced shit matte paintings
>Incorrect coloring fixed
>None of the Bluray fuck-ups

They are literally the best versions available.

>still has random horseshit in eisley
>still has that awful CG Jabba
>still has the RotJ musical number

This
"The Digital Rape of Mos Eisley" is quite litterally cancer

CG Jabba is 100% actually unwatchable and immersion murder

RoTJ musical number redux is a sadly unfunny meme

Fuck all and any special editions

you're absolutely right
they're not half bad
at least you can buy them on disc and you don't have to torrent and burn them onto discs

I recall hearing about another fan edit done more professionally than the Despecialized edition and with higher quality source material, but it was not ever intended for distribution

Can someone jog my memory as to what it was called?

Maybe this

This

...

>recommending any special edition over the despecialized editions
shit bait

Yeah there was a guy who spent like a decade or more restoring to 1080p frame by frame. He made a big deal about how he was contacted by Lucasfilm who told him that he could keep doing what he was doing, and apparently even gave him footage directly, as long as he didn't make a public release.

Shit's bullshit. I would hold out hope that Lucasfilm is working on an even better-er Blu Ray or 4k release but the Blu Ray was disappointing in various ways and I doubt they'll ever fix them. And I bet they wouldn't accept this guy's work because it would be humiliating to them that some dude in his home office made something that they were absolutely convinced couldn't be done.

Doesnt this version fucks up the force ghosts at the end of Jedi?

I could live with every other alteration and dismiss it, but that one kills me

This is probably it. I don't know much about it but I think Disney has told this dude NOT to release it.

I love Adywan's cut of A New Hope. He cut out a few minutes of the trench run & Tatooine if I remember correctly but his colors were way off.

If someone could combine the cut with the color correction & hd print it would be perfect

No amateur version of Star Wars will ever have the correct colors. There's no good references. Also, you can't expect film reels to have accurate colors. They fade after time.

Also, keep in mind people like Harmy aren't really working with state of the art equipment. The best they can do cannot measure up to even a fraction of what a proper restoration could do.

Yes, they're fantastic

If you aren't watching them or a straight up 35mm scan you're doing it wrong

The 2006 dvds are an alternative

Despecialized 2.7 fucking rules though. It has the colors of the silver screen edition with the sharpness of the blu ray

If you're not using your time travel machine to watch in back to 1977 and see it in theaters then you're doing it wrong.

And where/how could one acquire a 35mm scan?

Yeah, they still have jedi rocks, Jabba cgi, most eisley rape, destroyed editing and effects of the x wings, and the replaced anakin force ghost

Myspleen, a private tracker, has basically every popular star wars fan edit. There's a professional version of Star Wars (silver screen edition) and a rough edition of ESB (I actually really like it though)

>no good reference
>fade over time

You should actually keep up with the latest news, or any news for that matter. The 2006 dvds have correct colors, and there are Kodak film prints which haven't faded a bit.

anyone else getting pic related when trying to get on MySpleen? what gives?

What bro said. Im still on 2.5, will upgrade when I have the spare bandwidth.. the ~8gb are all you need unless youre burning bluray..

Do you know about 4k77?

Grindhouse version of Empire was fun

yes

try to find them

theyre the GOAT:

-blu-ray
-no shitty lucas edits
-everything you loved, restored

yeah I saw the changes. Not quite sure why 2.5 existed the color difference is incredible.

Still has the shitty crushed blacks in places like the ending that user showed though.

Grindhouse Jedi looks fantastic.Pretty spot on to my shitty local theatre when I was a kid from what I recall.

Grindhouse Empire has a white saber in places.

your onions on star wars silver screen?

they are extremely good

The special additions had some minor touches that helped. It was the shit pasted on the screen that sucked. Adding Sheev to the hologram scene, background on Cloud City, the bonk sound to the Stormtrooper hitting his head, touching up the lightsabers all helped. It was the CGI shit on Mos Eisely, the eyebrows, the Naboo Celebration, and Greedo shooting first is the stupid shit that need to go. I'd love to see a compromise where they keep the touch-ups but not add in the extra crap.

I wish they would go in and do an animatronic for Jabba in EP6 when he talks to han. I know they touched up the 90s CGI with the bluray release but come on. You can do better than that.... JJ abrams can at least.

It is much better now. The entire 35mm print of Jedi is now availabe online so Harmy just spliced that in for this shot rather than keyframing he eyebrows like before.

If you can get on myspleen, go for the njvc blu ray isos. It's harmy's edits but with interactive menus and special features on top of that.

yes absolutely. It's so pure

When is Disney going to cut a deal with Fox and release an official New Hope theatrical edition? It's fat wads of dosh lying there for the taking

every fucking edition has so bad issues. Useless fucks

fox will never let it go

and especially now with the whole marvel/disney beef

>-no shitty lucas edits
>-everything you loved, restored

What are these edits people keep bitching about?

lots of unnecessary edits that simply pile more shit onto the screen or completely ruin scenes, like greedo shooting first and vader's "no-o-o-o-o-o-o!"

The CGI is really out of place and looks very dated (they did it in 1997, and later in 2004).

Is there a side by side comparison? I just can't remember there being any difference

Yes they are the only way to watch the OT

Yeah I was fine with some of the changes that were shown but the vast majority are just bullshit. I agree m8

When it comes right down to it, fan edits are just Special Editions themselves. Not really the originals, just approximations. Which defeats the whole purpose.

>haven't seen harmys
it's almost perfectly what you would have seen when it was first in the cinema, this is not a fan edit this is the real original

I've seen 'em. The replacement of the sarlacc moves all over the place and looks like shit. Not saying what he did isn't admirable, but it's far from perfect. Saw ANH in the theater before it was Episode IV: ANH. I'm not some kid born post-SE.

It is definitely a fan edit, don't kid yourself.

Yea fair

Still the best option atm

Didn't Harmy build a full-size model of Han in carbonite and re-film the close-ups for continuity? Or was that someone else? Either way, that's serious fucking dedication.

Can we get a Despecialised version of The Warriors, please?
