They know people will pay that much to get the new book, and collectors also value hardbacks as well. It costs less than $.50 more to produce a hardcover than a trade paperback. For fucks' sake, your average Wheel of Time novel is longer than 700 pages and those books cost you like $8 each.

Images will drive the cost up some, but it's more likely just due to consumer demand. If it's still $40 a year from now I'd be surprised. I bet I can pick it up at B&N for $20 or less by summer of next year, much less if the pictures aren't even color prints.
