Fuuuck, are MGMT one of the few good rock bands still around? Off the top of my head I can only name them and The Cribs that I still like.

MGMT are back. They're one of indie's biggest hopes honestly. They still have some buzz and goodwill from Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations. The last album was a dud but they still have a lot of hype and the new singles were all great. I'm looking forward to it.

Does anyone still make music even remotely like Congratulations? It sounds like something eighties Sup Forums would consider patrician.

People like these songs and not Congratulations? that's weird. Like, Congratulations wasn't as serious, but still, they're no THAT different in style.

Yeah, t's funny beacuse the Pitchfork review calls psych pop "uncool" and just some years later everybody was sucking Kevin Parker's dick. It looks like MGMT make a lot more sense in 2018 than in 2008.

Their self titled is pretty hard to get into but there are definitely some of their best songs on there. Try to stick with it and it’ll grow on you. Congratulations is def a masterpiece though.

I'm in the US, I've heard a lot of hype in the indie "art kid" circles. A lot have been moving on to poptimism and hip hop post-ironically but MGMT making a comeback has them hype for indie again.

It was a knee jerk reaction by everyone since it wasn’t another pop album. They were too weird for the mainstream and not indie enough for the Pitchfork crowd. They’ll get the respect they deserve in the future when people look back on them in retrospect.

mgmt should have never gotten big in 2009 for their synthpop stuff otherwise congratulations and s/t would have gotten far better reception.

Because it sounds old. Out of time. It sounds like an album by a c-list eighties indie band, like the Teardrop Explodes or something.

Oracular Spectacular is party pop. A lot of the fanbase were the same people who like Fun. and Foster the People and put on "September" at college parties.

I'm from Argentina, I think most people here got stuck with their Oracular Spectacular side (a friend of mine thought they made EDM or something like that haha).
It think it started happening in 2011-2013 with all those psyche-revival acts, most comments I've read about Congratulations have been positive since then.

I don't know, I find it to be a lot closer to The Mamas And The Papas and Ariel Pink than any indie band.

This. OS was kind of the start of that whole scene and that became the norm on the radio for a while. Foster the People, Gotye, Fun. all that shit went #1 on the charts and it was pretty indebted to MGMT's pop hits.

Predicting 7-8s for this album from everyone but Rolling Stone (9) and Pitchfork (5.8 and a paragraph about how the lyrics in "Hand It Over" aren't #resistance enough).

giving this song a 4/10. goes nowhere and the lyrics are pretty bad + dropping the f-bomb ironically in two of the singles now? doesn't directly reference anything politically, gently touches on what sounds like political ideas, but sends mixed messages. i don't get it. not great as a single.

I've loved Little Dark Age and When You Die, and enjoyed Hand it Over, but I notice their new songs don't have much variation or changes in instrumentation like their previous work.
