This is something I've always wondered. In WW1, the major killer was barbed wire first, then machine guns second. I don't see why they couldn't have given troops a massive thick reinforced piece of metal, charged across no-mans land absorbing the bullets, with the majority of the force without shields running behind. Then when you reached the barbed wire, throw the metal across to make a bridge and 'compress' the wire so you can run across it.

You'll still lose men but it'll be a lot less. this was obviously before tanks.

They tried to make body armor but the material science of the time wasn't really up the job.
