I unironically think that the Matrix sequels aren't bad
They overreach what the Wajowski Humans are capable of telling, but the fact that they tried at all is admirable

It has a core theme of what it means to choose, and even if it gets convoluted it sticks to that theme.

I like how both the Zion bits and the Matrix bits talked about what it meant to choose.
I think it's important for the movies to establish that the quandary of choice is true for both the Matrix and the so called "Real World"

I think that's generally true of the Wachowski Homo sapiens.

That idea has always seemed cheap to me. Like it would fit better as a twist ending to a Twilight Zone episode than as the ending to The Matrix.

Nothing, but according to the (now rendered unreliable) narrator Memnoch, the spirit in man came about as a result of his ascent to consciousness. I'm probably fucking this up because it's been a few years, but when God created the great apes, there was no spirit. But as man evolved the spirit took shape within him.

The Chronicles is a lot of books... there's about 15 at a rough guess. Memnoch the Devil is about a spirit who claims to be the real Biblical deal. He talks at length about Creation and how man came to be and the nature of the cosmos.

On it's own it's interesting, in the context of th Chronicles it's quite enormous and very entertaining. The first book is Interview, but you could start with Lestat if you wanted to skip it for the movie, which is a good Cliffnotes on the book.
