I don't get it. They are traditionally an irrelevant franchise, overshadowed by the Lakers and Clippers (and when they were good, the Kings)
They literally drafted their main core without getting any #1 picks, and they had enough foresight to structure their contracts in such a way that signing Durant was possible.

no they weren't
as good as the 80's lakers were they played in a rock bottom terrible western conference. It wasn't till the late 80s the western conference started to get a couple of stronger teams going. Furthermroe those lakers, playing in a shit conference never won 70 games. They also lost a ton of nba finals. granted the 87 win over the celtics was mind blowing (that was a better celtics team)
The 00 lakers were great, and frankly thanks to prime Shaq (more than any other reason) no one could match up with them. But they also benefitted from a "down" league in general. There were no serious competitors to them appart from the Kings... post shaq they had to contend with the Suns, Mavs and Spurs, in the west and the Pistons and later in the decade the Celtics. The post Shaq lakers were not as dominant as the Shaq Lakers, they were very good in 07, but that team would have been bitch slapped by the shaq lakers.
