It's funny, because 2008 was a bit of an off-year for him. His .ISO was down, his BABIP was down, His triple slash was down, as well as his wOBA and wRC+. He hit more ground balls, and less fly balls, He pulled the ball less, and he made less hard contact that year. Even his fWAR and bWAR were down compared to the 3 years prior and two years after.

I'm not making the argument that he was some super adonis that could do no wrong, because clearly he had flaws as a player. He was borderline abhorrent as a fielder, he wasn't good on the basepaths, and as you said, he was a strikeout machine. But he was a good hitter, and an elite slugger during that stretch, being one of the biggest pieces on the best teams in the team's history. He was the best slugger on an offense built around slugging.
