Sounds like the new MGMT is headed there

A lot of the Banshees albums but this one in particular. It even has Smith on guitar.

Also Drab Majesty and some of Type O Negative's stuff.

Check out Black Marble

I like them a little bit. I'm not a fan of the vocals that much

Red Temple Spirits

Check out Cocteau Twins' Garlands and some of Lush's harder edged songs like Baby Talk and The Invisible Man.

Loveless

Eh, I'd say Isn't Anything is better suited for this when it has songs like Lose My Breath and Sueisfine.

A lot of The Cure's stuff?

This album and Wildhoney are the closest I can think of

not gothic sounding at all

I've always seen MBV as a mix of 4AD goth with the abrasive and effects-heavy American college rock bands like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr.

Their earliest stuff actually was goth rock, but it pretty much sounded like the world's worst Birthday Party tribute band.

Only right answer for what OP is asking for.

These are pretty great.

agreed, but does not sound as original as the genre title might imply

This is a really loud lofi version of what you're looking for
