I'm buying a used guitar tomorrow in a public place. No access to amplifier. How do I make sure it's in working condition?

There's a ton of little things to look for when buying a used guitar and it's too much for me to type out. I'd suggest searching Google and Youtube for things to look for when buying a used guitar or similar search terms. Check out a lot of links/videos related to this topic.

Probably the most important thing to look for is a twisted neck. Do not check intonation by comparing open notes to harmonics if that's what you're referring to. They will always be in tune with one another; it's simple mathematics.

String thickness will usually be irrelevant regarding string breakage. If you're breaking strings, it's almost always going to be because of an improperly filed/lubricated friction/contact point and you're gonna break strings there regardless of thickness.
