I still don't understand what the category "Artist had no idea what they were doing" means. Obviously the artist knew that they were making an album right?

i think of it as an album that took a risk or that was a certain change in the artist's style that didn't make much sense

No necessarily. That section typically means that the album feels messy, embryonic or generally experimental. Essentially the musician hasn't found their voice or their new direction yet.

It means they had no idea stylistically/musically what they were going for and putting together but it still made a very good project.

Or in some cases it means the artist was super shitfaced and didn't remember the album (See: Station to Station)
