>News: Oliver Rowland still thinks he should be anywhere near an F1 drive
When Justin Wilson died did the debris hit him in the forward direction of his face or did the nose cone come down on him and land on the top of his head?
Mason Gray
Who gives a shit about Indycar drivers lol. They're all trash. Top kek.
Elijah Lopez
good post
David Baker
Overrated post.
IIRC it hit him head on, then flew into the air.
Owen Mitchell
It came down and hit him on the top of his head
Jose Miller
Would HALO have saved him?
Ryan Peterson
I think that's one of the cases that the FIA said would have improved with the HALO in their press thing about why the HALO was picked.
Kevin Anderson
But aren't Indycar nosecones a) on purpose much heavier than F1 noses b) now tethered and c) only really dangerous on ovals? I don't really see how this HALO thing applies to F1 when looking at JW.
Thomas Adams
Good post. Underrated post.

Yes. The halo was originally designed because of Henry Surtees' accident, and they wanted to prevent anything similar from happening in the future (i.e. wheel/large heavy debris hitting the helmet). In the press conference they said that they refined the halo design to address leftover concerns they had because of Wilson's accident, so it would have prevented it.
>But aren't Indycar nosecones a) on purpose much heavier than F1 noses Yes >b) now tethered Yes, but tethers can still break (see Dixon's crash at Indy). Other heavy bits of bodywork can still fly off too. >c) only really dangerous on ovals? Yes. When Indycar introduce their cockpit protection (different solution to the same problem) it can "plug and play" into the new aerokit. >I don't really see how this HALO thing applies to F1 when looking at JW. I see your point; F1 is leagues safer than Indycar and the halo is an overreaction because of Wilson. But when you look at Surtees which was the original reason FIA wanted cockpit protection, and wheel tethers not being 100% effective 100% of the time, they kinda have a point even if I don't agree that the halo is the right step
Joshua Smith
You can't explain this.
Carson James
Hit the nail on the head. I don't like the look of the HALO but do think more head protection is required.
Jason Lopez
BAVI such a beautiful swan
Ethan Kelly
>more head protection is required
Oh bullshit. You can count the number of people it would have saved in the last 20 years on one hand, and still have fingers left to count all the championships Alonso will ever win.
Anthony Ortiz
>the nail Which driver's nickname was that?
Alexander Peterson
How many deaths prevented would you need to see to justify nore head protection? 1? 4? 10? The fact one death would be prevented is enough to justify it in my mind. I agree with the older drivers more than the younger ones and their key example of seatbelts. kek'd
Michael Martin
...
Jackson Collins
>I agree with the older drivers more than the younger ones and their key example of seatbelts. what do you mean? seatbelts don't make the cars look like garbage
Easton Hernandez
The thing is, the halo is half-baked. It's not a big increase in safety, it's just marginal. That 17% figure the FIA keep proclaiming only refers to the current open space around the cockpit, which isn't a big enough improvement for it to be worth it.
The visibility with starting lights, marshalling flags/lights hasn't been addressed other than "oh we'll fix it don't worry" without saying how it will be fixed, or "it's b-better than WEC visibility!!!". Half of the drivers on the grid are against the halo for one reason or another, which is reason enough that it should be scrapped in favour of a more comprehensively thought-out solution that offers substantially more protection against items like Massa's spring or rogue stones being flicked up (i.e. Chilton at Germany 2013)
aesthetics doesn't come into this argument at all from my point of view
Ryder Hughes
And? If your son or brother died and HALO could have prevented it would you feel the same way? I doubt it. I still think it's a knee jerk reaction and I think Stoffel said something that I agree with as well along the lines of that the engineers involved could come up with a more attractive solution but more head protection is a sensible step. In 20 years time looking back people will talk about HALO in the same way they talk about seatbelts or helmets. A necessary safety equipment that drivers were crazy to drive without 20 years or whatever ago. I agree it isn't attractive but how many deaths is worth a better looking car?
Wyatt Anderson
I agree with you 100% HALO has been rushed through. I think in 5 years time even the drivers who are against it will say they don't regret more head protection being added. I'm for Head protection and don't like HALO but it is the first step to improvement gen 2 HALO will be better gen 3 even more so ect ect.
Cooper Lee
In most cases it could've been prevented without Halo, take for example Jules who was driving too fast under safety car in the rain anyway which has introduced the Virtual Safety Car measure to prevent that from happening again and now if a similar race condition happened it would be red flagged anyway and no tractor cunt on the circuit while drivers are going at that speed completely making Halo pointless because the situation where it would've possibly (unlikely) saved Jule's life wouldn't happen under current safety procedures
Nathan Parker
this is already the 4th generation of the halo lol
Easton Sullivan
>I agree it isn't attractive but how many deaths is worth a better looking car? I believe it's possible to have head protection that doesn't look this shitty. But if it really isn't then halo still should not be used. The "how many deaths" argument can be used to justify any castration of the sport on the grounds of safety.
Charles Perez
I can't see what hit him, any help?
Jaxson Long
The HALO has nothing to do with Jules though, did you look at the reasoning for HALO at all or did you just jump on the "it's ugly I want drivers to die reeee" bandwagon? You know what I mean m80 I agree that a more attractive and effective solution can be found. To repeat again, I agree with head protection and am not a fan of HALO.
Hunter Diaz
that's Dixon's crash, not Wilson's
Ian James
Well I suppose it's been rushed because of the lawsuit but the HALO wasn't to save Jules

I just want closed cockpits.
Looks cooler, works better. I refuse to believe it's not possible to develop one for F1.

Imma be the asshole that says that these guys get paid A LOT of millions, might as well risk it.
Parker Robinson
Also initial ones will have minor cooling issues which means if Sophia ever gets there she will sweat more and her top will be see through by the end of a race.
Dylan Hughes
Oh my god Becky, for the millionth time: the FIA already dismissed the "jet fighter canopy" meme years ago because it launches wheels in to the crying Kimi kid sitting in the grandstand.
Kayden Ortiz
I think F1 should be for the best drivers. If the regulations were open to allow something like this to be a part of the car if wanted and team's wouldn't race down to the best driver willing to kill himself rather than adding head protection for the best drivers that want it. Then I would agree with you and wouldn't say my next sentence. How much right now would I have to pay you to kill yourself?
Nathaniel Diaz

wait
wouldn't any kind of shield strong enough to absorb the impact in that video launch shit anyway?
like, faced with a heavy hurtling object, what is the shield supposed to do other than deflect it away from the driver's face? we're talking about a competition with racers going +200km/h at any point in time, it seems to me that debris flying into a car and then into the stands is a small part of the larger problem of keeping fans from getting hurt by debris
Jordan Gonzalez
So will the halo have no chance of launching a wheel that gets thrown at it like the canopy does? Also it's weird that they chose a safety device that wouldn't be centered around deflecting small debris too considering that's where a lot more hazards come from.
Ryan Miller
>Look like a illiterate retard >HURRR G2 LE REDDIT
James Allen
I'd like to come back on that. When a blight on society dies we can go into negative picohitlers. Start racing Nick
In reality though I imagine a closed cockpit would be closer to an LMP1 style cockpit rather than an fighter plane.
Thomas Perez
Quality post I know but isn't the equation >1-((1-(chance something happens))^number of events) >1-((1-(0.05))^20) = 64% chance he dies in a season I remember some bullshit about chance something doesn't happen to find out how much it happens What's that?
Charles Smith
damn, it fucking BOUNCES
ultimately, it's then a problem of how much force you want going into the driver vs. how much you want potentially in the stands. less energy to stands = more energy to driver
I feel like it would be dumb that they introduce a more fan-conscious shield but then a driver gets splatted by a tire anyway
Jason Long
>A micromort (from micro- and mortality) is a unit of risk defined as one-in-a-million chance of death.
It makes comparisons easier. So getting murdered in the UK is 10 micromorts a year, where as for base jumping it's 430 per jump.
Landon Rivera
you're talking about actuarial tables/science
Camden Peterson
>Driver gets head thrown forward due to g-forces in a shunt >at the same time a wheel makes contact with the halo causing it to absorb the impact and bend toward the driver's head >driver makes contact with halo pillar
