It's like every genre that gets popular: contrarianism. Nu metal has awful shit, nu metal has good shit. It can be a little cringey to some just because of the association with/appeal to angry, edgy teenage white boys, which I suspect is doubly so on Sup Forums due to most Sup Forumstants having formerly been edgy white boys and also being obsessed with being cool

the problem with nu-metal is that it dumbs down and sanitizes its influences for the sake of commercial appeal. very often the lyrics are stupid as fuck and the music is simple and repetitive. the few bands that have sporadic musical merit are still fatally flawed for other reasons. basically it's trash music for adolescent. this was even apparent when I was a stupid adolescent.

Just like any other genre, there is good and there is bad...with numetal though, the bad is just cringey and edgy that it is more memorable. However, I always see bands like the Deftones spoken about positively

Bodies by Drowning Pool has the dumbest lyrics of any song I can think of, to the point that it was a joke when I was in high school.

I think Deftones were good because they had post-hardcore and shoegaze influence that the others didn't, and no cringey elements to ruin it. I still think Around The Fur is a good album, and I wouldn't say that about any of their peers.

To play the devil's advocate for metal(non nu metal), there's a big difference in decent lyrics that just have dumb or silly concepts, and straight up edgy garbage that was in most nu metal(popular and obscure).
