I don't get the criticism that the movie or (more specifically) the characters were unmemorable. R1 was far less character-driven than TFA, and yet still managed to have better written characters who were more likeable and had more complexity, even if you couldn't remember their names after the movie.
Idk personally I prefer likeable yet relatively grounded characters with dimension rather than Goofy Nigger Finn, Quippy Mexican Poe, or Mary Sue Rey.
The Force Awakens, in contrast to Rogue One, was a live action multiculturalist Teletubbies with a script written by Marvel or Joss Whedon.
Of course it's easier to remember characters when they're such a cliche. It's almost like cheating, it's obviously going to be easier to 'remember' the screaming, seig heiling, hamfistedly Nazi-esque "First Order" than it is to remember Director Krennic, but Krennic is a much more enjoyable character with some actual depth to his character.
Maybe Rogue One wasn't "a good Star Wars movie", but if that's the case then maybe the parameters for a good "Star Wars" movie are fucked, perhaps just stuck in the unreasonable Disney/George Lucas mindset that the series has to appeal to children first and foremost.
Say what you want about Rogue One on its own, but Rogue One was objectively a better movie than The Force Awakens. I think the people who hate Rogue One are those who genuinely like the Star Wars series and can't stand to see it deconstructed or refined (R1). They just want to see it endlessly polished (TFA).
