Quick napkin math tells me she's paying around 10% interest rate. And she's paying back about 1.4K a year while her debt grows by about 3K a year... So from the get go she's retarded for not paying more than the interest. Why would you ever sign up for this?

Did you put her student dept on credit card or something? Is this a normal student loan interest rate? In that case people would be way better off having their parents remortgage their houses for the 26K (at an interest rate circa 3%) and then paying back their parents.

It's more a combination of people signing up for variable rates and getting a job not worth going to school for. I pay about 570$ a month after a master's degree and I'm making enough that I can set aside a bunch of money every month to pay it off faster.

Mmh, I have 0 experience with large loans. I've always just saved up and paid in front. Including my college, which was admittedly much cheaper being in Quebec, only about 2.2K per sessions, so 4.4K a year for 3 years. I'd just save up money from a summer job and pay for that + transit from home.

I was lucky enough to get a master's program in my state, If I had to go out of state I would've been rocking 50k+ a year vs 14k.
