>mfw when i saw them in 2011
I saw them in 2013 for the Clockwork Angels tour. Glad I was able to see them
What's their best album and why is it pic related?
i accept this or moving pictures
That one's definitely up there. Hemispheres is my personal favorite, followed by 2112 and Moving Pictures. Permanent Waves, Farewell to Kings and Fly By Night follow in that order. Caress of Steel is very underrated but is overall a bit inconsistent
1. Signals
2. A Farewell to Kings
3. Moving Pictures
4. Hemispheres
5. Caress of Steel
I only ever got to see them 3 times, once for each of their last 3 tours, and all three times were fucking amazing
Underrated
Lesson learned, children. If you don't abuse the hell out of drugs, your playing skills can hold up when you're well past 50.
Never really understood the hype around them.
There's much better progressive rock out there with better musicianship and songwriting. Rush was fun to listen to for a few months until I dove a bit deeper into the genre.
I can understand how you could think that but songs like La Villa Strangiatto and Xanadu are some of the best that prog has to offer
I don't know. Most of their pieces sound the same to me. Descending heavy guitar line, some drum break, speed up a little, slow way down, then some epic chords under some vocals. Rinse and repeat. Maybe thrown in a slower pensive part with some keys.
agreed
the older i got the further this album crept up my rankings
My first concert. Went with my dad to see them at on the time machine tour in bristow. Great memory. I don’t listen to them as much as I did back then but I’ll always have a soft spot for them. Wish I could’ve seen them again but never had the opportunity to.
You are missing out. Every three albums or so of theirs their sound changes significantly and it still manages to be executed very well with whatever sound they go for. Listen to La Villa Strangiatto if you haven't already
I'm really not missing out.
Like I said in my previous post, I've tried for a few months to get the hype but I just found it to be too uninteresting and formulaic.
They aren't particularly prolific, they're not very unique or groundbreaking, and I tend to think they're kind of overrated.
>ywn see them on the 2112 tour playing a tiny convention center in a sleepy midwestern town to couple thousand people
mfw my dad is a Rush superfan and took me to see Rush with him nearly every tour from when I was 7 until they broke up
nah you're kinda missing out. Check out La Villa Strangiatto.
To each his own, I can't force you to like them
This wasn't even me but they're right
I am listening to Moving Pictures right now. Really don't get why this band in particular got so much hate. The music seems to still have this, like, heavy groove despite all the changes and shit. It's kinda like a combo of typical prog and hard rock/funk. Very cool. Though I guess I can see the vocals rub people off the wrong way.
>Descending heavy guitar line, some drum break, speed up a little, slow way down, then some epic chords under some vocals.
I have only been through side 1 of Moving Pictures, but none of the tracks are like this on it. It sounds like you described the structure to Yes' Close To The Edge if anything (minus the drum break) since the first real instrument in that song's a dark sounding guitar line with a main descending theme, a more upbeat verse bit, then that slow part that builds into the epic "I go up, I go down" part.
>Really don't get why this band in particular got so much hate.
Since when are Rush not one of the most acclaimed bands of all time?
They often get brandy as cheesy, uncool, or all flash and no substance by people who haven't actually listened to any of their music.
They have an extremely loyal fan base but are often disrespected by the mainstream and music critics. An example being how embarrassingly long it took them to get into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Rush isn't unique in this though as prog has this problem in general.
>The music seems to still have this, like, heavy groove despite all the changes and shit. It's kinda like a combo of typical prog and hard rock/funk.
It's new wave influence, they were listening to bands like Talkings Heads and The Police around that time.
Rush is a perfect musical entity. That’s why they are the greatest band of all time even though they may not have any of the particular musical qualities you seek.
Moving Pictures I would consider near the "later" period of Rush. Great album, but their proggier stuff are the four albums preceding it. They get more New Wave-influenced in the following three albums. Moving Pictures is a cool balance of their prog and hard rock stuff and the New Wave-influenced stuff
Seen them on Snake and Arrows, Time Machine, Clockwork Angels, and R40 Tour. They're my favorite band.
Time Machine was so amazing. Standouts for me were Camera Eye, Time Stand Still, Presto, Faithless and Marathon.
This, Power Windows, or Hemispheres.
You should listen to some of their other eras. They ditched prog because it limited their songwriting to have to outdo their previous technical achievement with the music.
Most people don't realize Rush are masters of both prog and 80's poppy synth.
Almost everyone who plays an instrument will tell you their technical ability is groundbreaking. Shame you can't appreciate the diversity of their career. You probably have adhd and didn't actually listen to many of their albums.
Feels. Would have loved to see Hemispheres tour in particular.

This one is up there for me. I'd probably have to give it to Anthem though
dropped these guys when i found out they were ayn rand worshippers
Wouldn't say they're worshippers. 2112 was inspired by The Fountainhead early in their career. Neil read a lot of books on tour, I don't think he worshipped anyone, in fact, that goes against the objectivism philosophy.
I almost saw them live in Phoenix in 2015 but I couldn't go due to financial issues and also because it was on monday.
Life is a dirty ass bitch
That's a dumb reason to dismiss some of the best music ever conceived.
My best friend kept putting off seeing them with me for years and now he's very regretful.
This, I like Burzum but I don't endorse burning down churches or murder.
I got to see their very last show, at the Forum :)
It's just now setting in that I'll never get to see them live.
I'm sorry man, it's a better show and experience than you could possibly imagine. Pray for a LeeLifeson tour and watch some old Rush dvds.
How was it? Any extra emotions?
I had the choice a few years ago to see either them or Alice in Chains live on the same night in Vegas. I chose AiC. It was a great show but I still have the nagging regret that I never saw Rush live.
Wouldn't be the same without Peart.
>Seeing nu Alice and Chains over Rush.
Damn.
Yeah, it was my third time seeing them (first was in 2010) and I really enjoyed the format of the show, opening with some really strong stuff off the new albums and then ending the first set with Subdivisions was a great teaser for what was to come.
Also, Xanadu is my favorite song so when they swapped out kits for the one with the tubular bells in the back I lost my shit. And the entire ending sequence with the high school gym setup, ending on a Garden Road jam, it was exactly the right mix of completely hype and really sentimental. Still one of the best shows I've been to.
Lessons from 2112
I know. It wasn't my best choice ever but I actually like nuAlice quite a bit.
I saw that tour while I had a concussion and I felt like I wasn't really there for the whole experience. I really wish I was more focused so I could appreciate it. It's hard to explain.
Everyday I'm expecting a new tour announcement because knowing that I was seeing Rush at some point in the future felt normal for the past 10 years or so, but one of these days I'm going to wake up to the news that one of the members has passed away.
I should mention that the tour before that was mostly ruined by my girlfriend at the times presence. I really wish I could be one of those hardcore fans who's seen Rush 100's of times.
I dunno, all three guys are pretty healthy aren't they? I wouldn't be surprised honestly if in a few years they come back around, at least for some small run of shows or something.
I know Geddy has one solo album, have any of them expressed any other interest in independent musical projects?
Never heard this before. Thanks for showing me this. Two of my favorite songs by them.
>I know Geddy has one solo album
Is it worth listening to?
Can't say, never listened to it. I'll probably give it at least one run through to see what I think of it.
Neil is done for sure. He has arthritis so bad he can't play anymore.
There was interest in a LeeLifeson tour but it seems like that idea has been thrown away according to Eddie Trunk and some other sources.
It's not too bad, it sounds like Vapor Trails era Rush and Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam drums on it.

If it makes you feel any better, they grew out of it, like most objectivists.
>ayn rand worshippers
Peart has totally renounced Ayn Rand and only credited the author to avoid legal trouble
OC
Dude I agree. I went on a binge a few months ago bc it had been awhile since i went through the discography and gave those prog era albums that i didn't care too much for another chance. And I really liked Power Windows.
In fact, after going through every album, I found that really the only album I couldnt at least get into a little was Hold Your Fire.
My favorite is probably still Fly By Night
>waaaaaah an artist has a different political view than me
>mfw seeing them on the R40 tour
A Farewell To Kings [Mercury, 1977]
The most obnoxious band currently making a killing on the zonked teen circuit, not to be confused with Mahogany Rush who at least spare us the reactionary gentility. Imagine a power trio Kansas or Uriah Heep with the vocals cranked up an octave. Or two. D+
Everything Rocks and Nothing Ever Dies [1990s]
>Neil is done for sure. He has arthritis so bad he can't play anymore.
Considering the sheer fury of his drumming, I wouldn't be entirely surprised.
>They ditched prog because it limited their songwriting to have to outdo
Or, you know, because prog went out of style in the 80s.
Critics tend to feel insecure and threatened when a band/artist is smarter than themselves.
True, I think most fans don't appreciate the poppy direction that Power Windows went.
Marathon should've been a Rocky montage song.
>Ayn Rand/libertarian worship
>smart
they hate libertarians there, but of course what would you expect from a teenager on Sup Forums
Sup Forums hasn't been libertarian since 2012 or something?
Same, I saw them in Toronto during their Time Machine Tour before the last album came out. Geddy has lost his high register from all those high notes he had to hit in the 80s but other then that they are still really fucking good musicians. I think Neil owns a music bar in Toronto but they only play blues and jazzy stuff or else I'd try to get a show for my band there.
>Geddy has lost his high register from all those high notes he had to hit in the 80s but
70s. He stopped doing that entirely by the time Reagan was president.
Sup Forums hasnt been libertarian since Ron Paul got fucked over and Gary "Mr. Aleppo" took over the US Libertarians.
Probably this one, though DEW from Grace is my favorite song.
I heard that at least one of their albums (AFTK?) was accidentally recorded a key higher than intended so Geddy had to _really_ strain his voice to fit with the music.
I love Moving Pictures, though I've heard Tom Sawyer enough times to last me for the rest of my life and I wish the radio stations would mix it up more.
>RSM puts them on a cover 40 years after running them into the ground every chance they got
Never change, guys.
"The good thing about a couple of guys who do nothing after a show except smoke weed and watch TV is that they're not likely to cause you a lot of trouble when you're on tour with them."
-- Gene Simmons
Nah the departure from prog was decided in 78 following how unpleasant the recording of Hemispheres was. PW, MP and signals all had progressive elements, but was mostly influenced by new wave artists they were listening to to. I don’t think think it a business choice. 2112 was an album recorded to ruin their standing with the record label so business never factored into their music.
Then again, Rush kind of disprove his assertion that people only start bands to get laid because I mean, let's be honest. Almost no women have ever been seen at a Rush concert and very few of their fans have ever had sex.
So same with Swans fans?
Indeed. Those kind of bands are listened to mainly by fedora-wearing autists who've never seen a naked female IRL (not counting their sister when she was 3 years old).
Rush were pretty much 180° opposite of anything that was popular for critics to like in the 70s-80s.
At least they all made it to the Hall of Fame alive. Usually those bastards make you wait till at least one of you are dead.
They didn't like guys like Rush and Zappa because they were alt right libertarians and most critics are socialists.
It's easier when there's only three of you.
