Just how big and extensive is the First Order?

Just how big and extensive is the First Order?

From Episodes 1, 2 and 3, it's reasonable to assume that the Republic controls a lot of systems, but not all of them.
From 4, 5, and 6, (as well as the prequels) it's reasonable to assume that the Empire controls the majority of the territory held by the Republic and the Separatists

From 7, I really can't tell how powerful the First Order is. Also, why does the New Republic need the Resistance?

there isn't actually supposed to be any continuity or logic

the point is to just repackage the original trilogy for a new generation, and to trick old fans into seeing at least 2 of the movies

I think the Resistance is separate from the New Republic. Leia formed it since the New Republic was ignoring the threat of the First Order. At least that's what I grasped from the wiki.

In the Prequels, the Republic controlled the Core and Colonies.

The Empire controls all of that, including invading and occuping a large chunk of the Outer Rim.

The New Order had control of just a handful of planets.

As far as I could tell they were just located on Starkiller Base and jerked off all day.

This they had all their shit stockpiled on that base and maybe one star destroyer. All gone.

>Also, why does the New Republic need the Resistance?
I just understood it that First Order is just a bunch of guys with some trade federation kind of backing, larping the Empire. So some people just formed a Resistance to fight them.

It's kinda like Antifasists and Neonazis. At least if you ask the writes apparently.

This. Not gonna get me a 2nd time

My initial understanding watching it was they're the hardcore imperialist planets a bit further out that stayed loyal and never became part of the new republic, but apparently they're not even that. The official explanation as far as I recall is that they're a mad faction that fled to uncharted space on the edge of the galaxy after the empire fell, and they've been biding their time and building Starkiller base ever since, while making regular forays into the outer rim to kidnap kids to boost their army. They literally might be just Starkiller base and a handful of backwater planets.

The explanation for the Resistance is that the New Republic government doesn't want to pick a fight with the First Order and seems to have signed peace agreements with them, which the Order is openly and massively violating because fuck the Republic I guess. The senate would rather pretend this isn't happening and ignores Leia when she tries to get them to take action, so she sets up a resistance army which the Republic don't back but decide to turn a blind eye to.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense though. I could get it if it was a Cold War scenario where the galaxy is split down the middle or something, but if the First Order is such a small and weak thing, why do the Republic tiptoe around them (to the point where they literally get destroyed) instead of just storming over and kicking the shit out of them sooner? Suppose its meant to parallel 1930s appeasement, but anyway.

How the fuck did they get the funding to hollow out a planet and turn it into a bigger death star that eats stars.
I mean I could understand with the Empire building the Death Star because of all the planets they have, but this doesn't make any sense.

they used the force to create lots of funds

>Also, why does the New Republic need the Resistance?

Because people (plebs) like Underdogs.
There is literally no reason for them to exist except for JJ's lack of creativity and his (((Masters))) need for money.
If the Republic had an advanced army the movies would lack an antagonist.

Episode 7 is so much worse than the prequels it's not even funny anymore.

It's hilarious that people get this jaded. Like your whole life hinges on whether or not you watch a movie

And now that they've blown up 5 planets, one of which was the New Republic capital, you'd imagine the entire might of the Republic forces would come down on the bow scattered and broken Order.

But it won't. Because... reasons.

How is the force going to create the funds?

Except the entire might of the Republic got blown up with the capital.

I'm looking forward to Episode X when Luke's grandson becomes a bad guy and with influence from some supervillain begins to rally an army and managed to build a weapon capable of destroying a whole planet. It's gonna be awesome looking forward to 2030.

>the entirety of a galaxy-wide republic's military might is stationed at a single planet

use the force on intergalactic accountants to funnel funds to the first order.

That still doesn't work plot wise to get all the rescources to build something like that.
Where the fuck is the (You)'s?

a single system but yeah that's how they make it out to be

The Force works in mysterious ways, it seems

Star Wars Official Lore Whoreâ„¢ here.

The first order AND the resistance are only small fractions of the size of the empire and the rebellion.

After the empire lost the galactic civilizations war, the empire split apart into power vacum based factions, each trying to take control of the empire. Of course this was a complete shit show and the former rebellion, now the New Republic, wiped out as much of the shattered empire as possible.

Mom Mothma made a treaty with the biggest remaining imperial faction, the First Order, stating that the New Republic won't interfere with them, as long as they don't claim any new or republic controlled planets, built a military, or create any sort of superweapon.

The First Order then promptly fucked off to the unknown regions of the galaxy and more or less broke every rule in the treaty. They grew bigger and bigger, created a military of essencialy children that they can manipulate (that is why even important figures like Hux are reletively young).

Mon Mothma then broke apart the new republic military because she is retarded, prompting Leia to create her own army because she knew better to assume the First Order wasn't going to break rules. That is why the Resistance and first order seem very small. Because they are.

Where the FO got the resources for Starkiller base still aren't explained and I think it's beyond retarded.

No, none of this is explained in the movies.

I always wondered how the Empire controlled anything because they are militarily incompetant as fuck.

The act like some middle eastern army in plastic suits.

Coruscant didn't get blown up you silly faggot. Show me evidence that they blew up the Republic capital.

This is one of the biggest problems with VII, it doesn't explain the state of the galaxy very well

Here's a rundown from the novel and the visual dictionary (which should have been explained in the opening crawl)

>empire is defeated by the new republic after the battle of jakku, one year after the battle of endor
>peace treaty is signed, empire is forced to disarm
>empire retreats to unoccupied space
>leia is concerned about their growth as the first order
>new republic is not concerned, the resistance is formed
>the resistance is publicly disowned by the new republic as they want to keep the peace

There are scenes in the novel that would have added so much to the movie. They're political, but politics are a big part of Star Wars

I think the A New Hope plot beats are the laziest criticisms of this movie, they had so many opportunities to tell a different story within the template of ANH

The movie still would've had major flaws, but it would've at least made slightly more sense if the even gave us a TASTE of backstory like this within the movie itself.

It's like JewJew was so adverse to talk of politics or background (because, like, the prequels had lots of boring political talk, and therefore any political talk whatsoever is bad!) so they completely did away with LITERALLY ALL EXPOSITION which led to the clusterfuck where we don't even have a single reason to root for the resistance when we haven't been told anything about them or the FO.

And it's still baffling how the republic would apparently let them get away with that.
Or that a faction that was only a tiny sliver of the power of the empire was able to build a superweapon much bigger and more powerful than the deathstar.

Just reread this and am noticing a bunch of typos. Sorry about that, I'm a crummy phoneposter

as big as it'll suit the narrative for Jar Jar Abrams

The worldbuilding is what made the original star wars feel so fucking comfy. Nobody sat around for hours explaining the rebellion and the empire and who all these people and factions were, but they still gave you just enough taste of lore by talking about the jedi and the clone wars and the senate and the emperor and all these things, and if gave you the sense that this was a massive world with rich history.

TFA feels like a fucking video game with a throwaway plot. It's like one of the plots you'd see in an old nintendo game manual that some intern at Konami quickly scribbled together.

Even with the lack of worldbuilding aside and the Star Wars clone plot aside, it was still shit. The characters were flat and bland, and interesting characters are what makes star wars. And there were so many plot holes and things that didn't make sense. Hell, the entire plot revolves around finding the map to Luke. Why is it so important for the rebellion to find Luke? Why is it so important for the First Order to find Luke? Why did he disappear in the first place? ("because my apprentice went evil" is not a sufficient response). Who was the old guy at the beginning and why was he the one with the map to Luke? Why is finding Luke something given equivalent important to getting the DEATH STAR PLANS in the original? It just seems like the explanation for this mcguffin bullshit is literally just "because Luke is a main character and we lack all subtly and we're doing it because it's what needs to happen in order to set up the plot to the next movie."

Why the hell wasn't this in the opening crawl? It drives me nuts. Fine, don't put it it the movie if you feel like it will hold it back, but this could have been summed up in 2 lines of the crawl. What the hell were they thinking

Imagine if Hitler won WW2, was assasinated by rebels, a civil war ensued, and the leading businessman and politicians of the military industrial complex hastily assembled a new organization to keep the money flowing. That's what the First Order is.

my headcanon is that the empire had starkiller base well into development at the time of battle of yawin, and new order got hold of it and only finished the job.

battle of endor*

Hell, i don't even see why it couldn't have been in the movie proper. It wouldn't have ruined the pacing whatsoever.

I mean, let's take a look at the original SW. There are only two segments where backstory is given:
1) when Luke is at Obi Wan's house, where he briefly talks about the jedi, republic, and anakin skywalker
2) at the imperial board meeting on the death star when Tarkin walks in and says the senate has been disbanded and the last vestiges of the republic swept away, and that vader is the last of his "ancient religion"

That was literally all there needed to be. You don't need much, but you just need SOMETHING for people to grasp onto to have any sort of idea about what the fuck is going on in the universe.

JJ was only able to get away with this because plebs were content to just go "lol, FO = evil empire and Resistance = good rebels, sure whatever!"

Also, Leia's political career and most of her credibility in the eyes of the senate was fucking destroyed when it got leaked that Darth Vader was her father.

Passable headcanon that is honestly too good for the people currently in charge of the franchise.

From what I glanced at, Starkiller Base was pretty much an Empire design and was partially started anyway. Imperials in hiding and later First Order probably completed it somehow. Explains the flaws and why that big hologram guy wasn't too concerned with losing it. First Order is probably just a means to an end for that dude.

thanks to the force that palpatine used

I figured it was an ancient super weapon that only Snoke had the surviving knowledge to really implement with the help of the Imperial Remnants.

>Snoke appears after the death of Sheev, when he figures he is now the last remaining Sith
Maybe give some backstory that he was supposedly killed by Sheev after he was ordered to by the Wise guy that was Sheev's master
>Knows of ancient super weapon
>Finds some remaining Imperials and leads them to it, beginning his plan to become Emporer, like Sheev, but with less planning and more brute force

>From 7, I really can't tell how powerful the First Order is. Also, why does the New Republic need the Resistance?
Patriarchy.

My understanding is that, in the PT, the Republic is supposed to control nearly all of the galaxy, but is either ineffective at enforcement or allows for a great deal of autonomy.

In the OT, the Empire is attempting to control the entire galaxy and tries to stamp out autonomy.

And in the Sequel Trilogy, Disney controls the entire franchise and is attempting to stamp out any original ideas.

Also, more women leads who swallow Jew cock and minorities to pair them with because lol whitebois

So I guess when The Emperor died the Empire collapsed and all the planets just kind of reformed back to The Republic. They never actually fought The Empire, they WERE The Empire. The Rebellion was more of a standalone rag tag group of people and ships that organized themselves. So the Republic never actually fought the Empire, and did not want to do it afterwards either.

I figure that too, and the First Order is simply the military industrial complex left over from the former Empire. Eventually the military industrial complex decided to have itself a coup.

The citizens of the Empire were just tired of the violence from the Clone Wars and Imperial occupation. They accepted the New Republic without much resistance

Mothma's peaceful methods were favoured, though the New Republic wasn't completely dearmed as she would have liked. The New Republic has a fleet but it's smaller than during the Clone Wars
