How is this even a question?
Oscar Peterson. Monk is for tryhard faggots. Learn something about music.
Thelonious Monk
Bud Powell
Bill Evans
Herbie Hancock
McCoy Tyner
Paul Bley
Kenny Kirkland
Richie Beirach
David Kikoski
Brad Mehldau
Craig Taborn
John Escreet
>Monk
Agreed
Also, Monk's dream is best Monk

How is it try hard? Oscar is good but he doesn't have any decent albums tho
All pianist sound the same.
New to jazz. Where does Hank Jones go on the list?
Hank Jones is nice but entry level
>John Escreet
>David Kikoski
good taste desu. never heard of kenny kirkland so I'll look him up
Add to this Mal Waldron, Keith Jarrett, Art Tatum, and Erroll Garner.
Wrong. Most entry jazz fans don't even know who Hank Jones is.
Sun Ra was the greatest pianist who ever lived
>Most entry jazz fans don't even know who Hank Jones is.
But I started with Hank Jones tho
Call me a pleb or whatever, but I don't think anyone would ever top Bill Evans for me.
Why would that be pleb? He's one of the greatest and most influential jazz pianists ever.
Because it's the most obvious answer, i guess.
Yes, all genius musicians. I'll add Ahmad Jamal, i rarely seen him mentioned here.
Horace Silver tho
well they all play piano
All of these. Especially McCoy although I’m not as familiar with his work, I just really love his contributions to Coltrane’s quartet.
>grunts in your path
Silver was an absolute genius. Though I've a soft spot for Red Garland.
Cool. That doesn't make him "entry-level" though.
Agreed. Live at the Pershing is amazing.
Who is the best bassist and why is it Paul Chambers?
...
Because Doug Watkins and Scott LaFaro died young. That said, Ron Carter is better than Paul Chambers. And Charlie Haden is up there;
wheres my man Ryu :(
for me, it's Herbie Lewis
he didn't record a lot, but it's all top tier and he's got a pretty unique style
I'd also say Albert Stinson, but there's even less to listen to
for the more prolific bass players who haven't been cited already, I'd go with
Oscar Pettiford
Pierre Michelot
Ray Brown
NHOP
Dave Holland
Henry Grimes
Henri Texier
Gene Ramey
Pierre Boussaguet
Leroy Vinnegar
if we talk about solo bass records, I'd probably say Jean-François Jenny Clark
This is a thread for "best" jazz pianists. Maybe you could start a thread for excruciatingly average jazz pianists if you want some discussion of Ryo Fukui.
nigger
No one mentioned Chick Corea yet?
Really surprised that no one named art tatum
savage
barry harris and bill evans for real sure
One of my favorites is Jan Hammer most famous from Mahavishnu Orchestra. He plays a lot of electric keys, but his acoustic work is great too. Check out John Abercrombie's album Timeless some of Jan's best playing.
timeless is s tier
Joey Alexander
Art Tatum is by far the most talented jazz pianist of all time.
youtube.com
McCoy Tyner
Tommy Flanagan
Bud Powell
Bill Evans
An argument could be made for any well known jazz pianist. I'll mention Oscar Peterson again.

>Go for other instruments too

>Bass:
Jasper Hoiby, Dave Holland, Mingus, LaFaro, Pedersen, and Paul Chambers.
>Drums:
