Movie musicals are usually shit. Stage or nothin' I say!
Sadly, even stage musicals have become shit lately. They've become jukebox musicals with original songs.
Movies have turned well crafted musicals into the jukebox mold too.
I think the only recent musical I saw that was actually a musical was Stage Fright. Too bad it didn't have that many songs. Even Les Mis received the RENT treatment and was turned into a normal movie with people bursting into single, well-spaced and defined songs.
Rock Operas are awesome though and they are at teir best on the screen. Rock Operas aren't that good on stage (example: Tommy).
The movie medium is perfect for that kind of craziness.

The San francisco version of Lestat the Musical by Elton John. Great musical that was turned into a shitty one because of Elton's insecure litte ass when a few critics complained about the show. The SF version is still the musical that sold the most tickets while it wa srunning, beating Ctas and Wicked. It was that fucking good.
