Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. What does ravenclaw even study? Casting spells is literally learning a word and a wand wave and there are only so many magical beasts and plants. It would take you like 2 years top to learn everything there is to know about magic.

History of Magic is intensive as any other dry European history and Runes and Arithmancy are literally learning a new language plus Algebraic Magic. Also a spell isn't just how you say it plus "swish and flick." It's mostly psychologically willing something to happen that should be impossible, the wand and words are just a focusing element. Wizards with enough raw power and concentration can cast wordlessly without a wand, which is how most accidental magic happens anyway. I can imagine there being plenty to study.

Arithmancy is like wizard math and old runes is a shit ton of old runes from different cultures, how to spell them and how to combine them to reach certain goals. Potions is part of alchemy and has a system (harry is just too dumb to understand why putting x and y together and doing z at the exact right time creates the wanted potion but that is simply because Harry is fucking dumb and never bothered to learn the theory). There is much to learn for those who want.

Switching the light on is something everyone here knows how to do, but really understanding why and how everything works is much harder and simply not necessary for most people.
