Yes very often that has been the case for me. I think the first Emperor album is genius for this reason: there are all these cheesy movie soundtrack synths sitting atop the mix that give new listeners something to grab on to. But as you continue listening, your ear acclimating to the wall of sound production, the deeper complexity of the guitar melody unravels and you enjoy the album even more. Plus, they wisely kept the vocals somewhat low in the mix, which is nonsense from a traditional rock mindset but serves black metal very well.
By the same token, that first AtG album might be off-putting to those only familiar with their later works, but a song like "Windows" should surely keep you interested with its melodic riffs.

The opening riff in Wasted is the most generic riff ever written, though. There are thousands of metal songs with variations of that riff in them and Steve's weak guitar tone on the original recording doesn't help. The opening riff to Rock Brigade is more interesting. High and Dry is a vastly superior album. The riffs are generally more creative and the guitar tones are better as well. There really isn't a bad song on the album except maybe bringin on the heartbreak (of course the biggest hit is the worst song on the album). You can say Leppard is more hard rock in every post Ottn album but I've heard them referred to as pop metal. But metalheads will always be metalheads and they're touchy about what they call metal.

On Through the Night was decent NWOBHM with new wave/glam influence, common stuff for '80s but with good guitar work. There are far better records out there though. (specifically for a lying jew like you: see Witch Cross or Diamond Head)
After Mutt Lange came they gradually went from decent pop rock to production >>>> everything mode. It was getting dumber and lowest common denominator. And when Willis left and their drummer lost a hand, Def Leppard literally unlearned how to write songs.
The pinnacle was Hysteria, that sounds like EDM with absolute GARBAGE tier songs. It's not even a band's album, it's Mutt Lange's solo album, overblown so much that it was seen from space. And it was literally—LITERALLY—A-fucking-OR. Put your eyes on the pic you retard, and read it with your fucking pupils. Where it has these 3 fucking letters, you autistic cunt.
No wonder that in the '90s, everyone forgot that garbage like a fever dream. And Def Leppard? Afer Clark died, they became pathetic grunge clones. Despite they were joined by Vivian Campbell, another overrated hard rocker. Metallica S/T was a pinnacle of music compared to this shit.
And whoop de fucking do, Mutt Lange went to produce Shania Twain who he also married. Then went on to produce Maroon 5 too. Who. Would. Have. Thought.
