though, these two bands have nothing in common and they all strive to do different things.

Radiohead is a good gateway band to "real music" for 15 and 16-year old kids. I'd rather have them listening to Radiohead than Nine Inch Nails or Odd Future or whatever other moron shit.

They're great bands with great discographies, and the respect they have they deserve. I just like NIN more because I feel like it takes more chances and is musically more interesting.

I don't think there is anything insulting about NIN, some lyrics are perhaps too angsty, a lot of them actually, but when you look over that, the music is really good, and those angsty lyrics actually add nice rawness to them.

Nine Inch Nails are an awful, awful band. Trent Reznor... fuck, I can't even be bothered to make fun of that guy.
What's worse, NIN engenders and encourages intellectual laziness in their very young and very impressionable audiences. These formative experiences with art are crucial, you know. Today you're 17(already way too fucking old to be a NIN fan) and think The Fragile is an era-defining masterpiece, tomorrow you're 28 and your favorite films are still Fight Club and The Dark Knight and you're still playing videogames and arguing about The Downward Spiral's "concept" on online message boards. Like, there's no salvation for you at that point.

I mean Radiohead aren't exactly high academic art either, but there's enough substantial reference points in their work for people to eventually find their way towards the real shit. The only shit people can find their way towards thanks to Nine Inch Nails are Marilyn Manson and Nietzsche. Very bad.

Well, it was thanks to NIN that I found Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Neubauten, Laibach and got me into Industrial. Which then led me to Pharmakon, Prurient, Ramleh and others.
