Johnny Cash is timeless and will be remembered. Trent Reznor/NIN will not. I will say Pretty Hate Machine was great when it first came out though.

It's set at about 10 years after the epilogue of "Days of Future Past" and most mutants have died out from a virus made by the Essex Corporation.

The virus fucked up Logan's healing factor to the point where he's mortal again. Xavier's mind was screwed up and he's now pretty much demented. Logan and Xavier are wanted men, so Logan hides out Xavier in New Mexico in an old toppled water tower. Caliban is a mutant Logan came across who also survived the virus because he was very sensible to sunlight and was secluded in the sewers. Caliban basically works as Xavier's caretaker while Logan is not around.

Logan works as a limo driver to pay the bills, and is often employed by a local mobster who owns a casino to escort high rollers, since a local gang, the Bombers, is terrorizing the city. Early on Logan has to drive the mobster's sister to her wedding, but gets intercepted by the Bombers, who try to kidnap her. Logan saves her and she covers for him with her brother about him being a mutant, since there's a bountty on every living mutant out there in the world.

Later on, while Logan is dropping off some clients at the casino, he sees the casino owner's thugs forcefully taking a little girl into the casino. He attempts to intervene, but is caught and subjected to a violent beating by the casino guards before the owner shoots him point-blank in the chest. Since his healing factor isn't what it used to be, Logan is actually out cold for a few hours, and his seemingly dead body gets dumped in a ditch. He later revives and makes his way back to his house.

Reznor is the songwriter and producer of Hurt, he gets the majorty of royalties anytime the Cash cover gets used, why are you getting so aggresive senpai?

When Xavier finds out about the little girl in problem, he persuades Logan to rescue her, and they go to the casino together, where Xavier uses his powers to help Logan slip past security. He makes him way to the private section and catches the mobster trying to exchange the girl with some mercs. The little girl suddenly springs her, shows her claws and kills some soldiers before getting shot. Logan intervenes, fights off the mercs and the casino guards and leaves with the little girl and Xavier, who loses control of his powers and causes everyone to feel a seizure of sorts. They make it back to the house and Xavier reluctantly reads the little girl's mind and finds out her name is Laura and that she was captured by Transigen, which is an offshoot of the Weapon X Program that has been rounding up the surviving mutants to turn them into living weapons. The little girl was one such weapon, but was set free by a nurse that grew fond of her, teaching her how to read and talk and giving her the name "Laura".

Logan isn't happy with all the trouble he has brought to their doorstep, but Xavier is adamant they need to protect Laura and Caliban tells them of a rumored mutant safe haven halfway across the country. Logan doesn't believe it, but Xavier wants to take Laura there. Logan refuses until Donald Pierce and the Reavers show up at their doorstep, having tracked them down from the casino

Pierce wants Laura, Logan refuses to give her up, the Reavers show up to take her by force and Logan finally lashes out and kills several of them, as does Laura. They get overwhelmed and escape with Xavier in a car. Caliban is left behind because he can't step into the sunlight. Pierce and his men then find him and force him to help them track down Logan, torturing him with sunlight.

Logan wants to drop off Laura somewhere vaguely safe and let someone else handle it from then on, but Xavier convinces him to take her all the way through. They drive a long stretch before their car begins breaking down and they stop at a motel. Xavier convinces Logan to interact with Laura more, but without his meds and on the run, his powers are growing increasingly unstable and his mind more erractic.

By this point, Logan believes Laura is just some girl with a similar powerset to him who also got snatched and experimented on by Weapon X. The Reavers are also cybernetically-enhanced mercs made by Transigen. Pierce reports to Dr. Rice, their leader, who tells them to capture Logan alive.

As it turns out, Laura is a clone of Logan made with DNA samples recovered in the 1980's. She's the 23rd attempt to clone Logan, and the first succesful one. Rice is now halfway through a 24rd clone (X-24) that is male and adult, but experimenting on Logan up and close will provide him with enough DNA and data for a bunch more clones.

The virus that wiped out the mutants was also made by Transigen, which is funded by the Essex Corp, to kill all the weak mutants and expose the strong to them be made into weapons and shit.
